Topic: The Flamin Groovies

The Flamin Groovies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Flamin Groovies were an American rock music band of the 1960s and '70s.
Their second album, 1970's Flamingo, was a considerably stronger effort and revealed a band with a sly sense of humor and a musical approach that continued to draw upon '50s rock and roll as well as upon the work of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
In 1971 Roy Loney left the Flamin Groovies, and was replaced by singer and guitarist Chris Wilson, who, along with Jordan, began to move the group in a more overtly power-pop direction.

allmusic ((( The Flamin' Groovies > Biography )))
One of America's greatest, most influential, and legendary cult bands, the Flamin' Groovies came out of the San Francisco area in 1965 playing greasy, bluesy, rock & roll dashed with a liberal sprinkling of British Invasion panache, in an era soon to be dominated by hippie culture and hyperextended raga-rock freakouts.
What made the Groovies such a formidable band was the double dynamite supplied by guitarist Cyril Jordan and singer/wildman Roy A. Loney.
Quickly signing with Kama Sutra, the Groovies closed the '60s and started the '70s with two terrific records (Flamingo and Teenage Head), but public apathy and the increasingly tempestuous relationship between Jordan and Loney led to the latter's departure for a solo career in 1971.

Flamin' Groovies: Sneakers EP / The Rockfield Sessions: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Before The Flamin' Groovies became the perpetually struggling epitome of brawling, tuned-out rock 'n' roll songwriting supremacy, they were just perpetually struggling teenage rockers in a world that had suddenly gone all mod again.
In the late 60s, an apostrophe-less Groovies was fending for its life amidst the roving psychopaths, hallucinations, and trampled corpses of San Francisco.
Still, The Rockfield Sessions is as good a place as any to start a budding Groovies infatuation, as it marries their early grime and later tunefulness in one of the essential expatriate rock sessions of our times.

 Flamin' Groovies Reviews
The Flamin' Groovies were arguably the best band this side of CCR to emerge from the '60s San Francisco scene.
The problem was that the Groovies didn't conform to the expected psychedelic ballroom sound explored by the likes of the Dead, Airplane, Quicksilvers, and Grapes; instead the Groovies were a back-to-basics rock'n'roll band with a greasy, Stones/'50s inspired kick.
As usual, the Groovies were out of step with what the public wanted, and by the end of the '70s the band had finished their recording career (though they still play live gigs from time to time).

Bands in northern California (the Flamin’ Groovies’ base of operations) in the late 1960s (the period of their first great recordings) are, for those not part of the cult of the psychedelic, somewhat embarrassing.
Unsurprisingly, the Flamin’ Groovies were relegated to cult status in the United States -- although, like all good cult acts in the US, they were more popular in Europe and today their best work is only available on imports.
And whereas most bands would play up the poor technology for the sake of authenticity, the Flamin’ Groovies play over it, and instead of celebrating their frugality, we realize that Loney and Jordan were, most definitely, on to something.

 TrouserPress.com :: Flamin Groovies
Always more cult-popular and influential than commercially successful, the Groovies, led by irascible but talented guitarist/singer Cyril Jordan and (until 1971) singer/guitarist Roy A. Loney, always embodied the rebellious, youthful spirit that fueled punk, but held tenuously to their musical roots — '50s American rock'n'roll and '60s British pop.
Flamingo and Teenage Head (years later, the former was reissued as This Is the Flamin Groovies in Germany) are the band's strongest early efforts, taking advantage of improved skills and equipment to make loud, brash records in sharp contrast to the era's prevailing bland and puffed- up music.
When the Groovies finally reemerged with the Edmunds-produced Shake Some Action in 1976, it was those two '72 leftovers — "You Tore Me Down" and the amazing, apocalyptic Byrds-like title track — which most reflected the group's power-pop reorientation.

The Flamin' Groovies really had more in common with the MC5, who deployed the same twin-guitar assault on white rock.

The Flamin' Groovies were perhaps the strangest of the many strange bands born in the psychedelic haze of late-1960s San Francisco.
While the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Santana jammed, the Groovies stripped rock music to its core, cranking out poppy tunes far more reminiscent of the British Invasion.
The Flamin' Groovies were initially conceived as a joint venture for vocalist Roy Loney and Cyril Jordan, the duo behind the band's acclaimed early '70s LPs "Flamingo" and "Teenage Head."
