Kids play stickball in the street, the subway passes overhead, and it's hot, darned hot.
The answer to that question is a big ol' "What do you think?" But The Flamingo Kid isn't great because it creates some kind of suspense about where it's going.
The Flamingo Kid is like an early version of (as I already mentioned) Dirty Dancing or The Secret of My Success.

Set in 1963, Matt Dillon plays a teenage kid from Brooklyn from a solid working-class family, headed by Hector Elizondo as his loving, if volatile, father.
He gets a job parking cars at the tony Flamingo Club, and starts a summer romance with a pretty, college girl (Janet Jones, before the world knew her as the Thief of Gretsky) who doesn't mind his humble roots and invites him to her uncle's house for dinner.
There he meets Phil Brody (Richard Crenna, who is marvellous), a self-made man, brilliant gin-rummy player, and very much in need of a kid to idolize him--his wife and daughter are unimpressed.

Marshall, a co-writer on the film as well, handles The Flamingo Kid with the unpretentious verve of his main character and comes up with a conclusion that manages to be satisfying despite its contrived nature.
The film is also bolstered by the two central performances of Dillon and the late Crenna, with the latter turning in what might've been the best work of his career as the smooth-talking Brody.
