Since the summer of 1976 The Fleshtones have been blending rock & roll with R&B, and garage with dance and serving it from town to town across the globe with a smile, a great attitude, and lots of late-night sweat.
To quote Keith: "How and why The Fleshtones started was that there was a place to do it!" Countless "Blue Whale Bashes," Lower East Side sightings, and an endless string of gigs and records later, The Fleshtones continue to record and perform with a wit, passion, and energy that few bands can top.

The Fleshtones are one of the best examples of a band that managed to recycle a sound of the past for a newer generation.
The Fleshtones also seem to flirt with soundtracks of those movies and TV series that somehow reincarnated the forbidden myths and dreams of the youth of that generation.

The Fleshtones debuted at CBGB's on May 19, 1976, and began touring in earnest in the early-80s.
The Fleshtones were the first band to be booked or to play at several famous venues, including Irving Plaza and Danceteria in Manhattan, Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey, and the original 9:30 Club in Washington D.C..
The Fleshtones shared a rehearsal space with The Cramps on the Bowery in 1977.

When we bought some of their merch (including a copy of their new disc Beachhead), frontman Peter Zaremba came over and humbly asked if we wanted him to sign the CD - and then took it over to the rest of the band for each one of them to sign.
In the face of the Fleshtones' choreographed stage moves, call-and-response vocals, and infectious attitude there was none of the usual hipster reserve, just a lot of moving body parts.
After a too-short set the Fleshtones only did one encore because they were heading back to Seattle at 4 in the morning to catch a flight back to Noo Yawk.

This was easily one of the best Fleshtones shows I have ever seen, from the the surreal venue to the surreal audience to the surprise appearance by Gordon Spaeth to the climactic finish.
The Fleshtones were actually the beginning of a really long weekend; the plan was to see the band, stay at a friend's house (I don't live in NYC unfortunately), and head up to Maine for a bluegrass festival the next morning.
As I've written before, the genius of the Fleshtones is their combination of sincerity, with a good bit of tongue in cheek, and that throbbing, stomping, irristable beat.

OK, my fave Fleshtones moment was back in the early eighties - I had been stranded in New Orleans for a few months, and was thrilled to see that one of my fave bands from when I lived in LA was gonna play at a club there, Tipitina's I think it was.
Seeing The Fleshtones play was a delicious and exciting taste of home, and I danced until I was exhausted.

Amazingly, Streng and Zaremba's aged-in-the-studio songwriting hasn't lost its colorful zest, which means that the group's recent albums are just as likely to prove wide- eyed and wonderful as their first blasts of serious fun.
The results are uneven, though the high points are sublime: the snarling prehistoric Kinks guitars of "Way Up Here," the raise-the- dead soul fervor of "Whatever Makes You Happy," a swift remake of Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose's "Treat Her Like a Lady" and so on.
It's tempting to blame the letdown on "engineer" Steve Albini, but other than razorblading Streng's guitar tone with his patented anti-lapidary trebling action and organizing inappropriately harsh and thin sound, he doesn't appear to be at fault.
