The Flintstones (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It stars John Goodman and Elizabeth Perkins as Fred and Wilma Flintstone, Rick Moranis and Rosie O'Donnell as Barney and Betty Rubble, Halle Berry as Fred Flintstone's assistant Sharon Stone, Kyle MacLachlan as Fred's evil boss Cliff Vandercave and Elizabeth Taylor as Wilma's mother, Pearl Slaghoople.
This film was not critically acclaimed, but was a box office hit grossing over $130 million domestically during the Veteran's Day weekend in 1994.
The film was a box office disaster making just near $30 million domestically, $100 million less than the first Flintstones picture made, which stalled the film franchise indefinitely.

On the disc is a video log by the director (David O. Russell) which features a moment of pre-production on the film.
Admittedly, this film is a step up from the first but so is a slap in the face.
Brian Levant, the director behind such horrid cinema experiences as Leave It To Beaver, Problem Child 2, Jingle All The Way and the first mess that is The Flintstones had four (credited) writers take a swing at this one and none of them could write a gag to their life on this project it appears.

The film recounts — with less wit than the worst episode of the original cartoon series — the initial meeting and romance of Hanna-Barbera's most beloved stone-aged couples.
Bachelors Fred Flintstone (Mark Addy, The Full Monty) and Barney Rubble (Stephen Baldwin, finally playing a character that's as dumb as he looks) are lowly Bedrock quarry workers.
The film's few bright spots are provided by Alan Cumming, who does double-duty as the diminutive, adorable space alien Gazoo (ironically, one of the most annoying characters in the cartoon series), and later as rocker Mick Jagged.

With all the disaster films that are out there these days, it’s worth noting that some of these classics of the 70's set the tone for what we see today.
Billed as an animal comedy film for kids, this isn't funny, doesn't appeal to kids, and doesn't really have an animal as the star, though the ape mask is fairly well-made.
Sets, costumes, and props also provide an authentic feel to the film, and we feel the tension build as loyalties are tested and as a hero struggles to just be a man. R for violence, sex, and language.

And of course it's not much of a stretch to say that without the foresight (or is that hindsight?) of The Flintstones we might not have the Simpson clan today.
The original live-action cast John Goodman, Rosie O'Donnell, and the rest have decided to sit this one out, perhaps out of concern for not only their legitimate careers but also for the love of the source material.
Tellingly, even the youngest members of the audience appeared to be more interested in their dwindling soda supply than anything up on the screen.

This multi-million dollar live-action remake must count as one of the most obsessive of Eco's "more real than the real thing" replications in that it goes so far as to three-dimensionally recreate characters that were originally rendered flat and build an entire town that originally only appeared as sketchy background.
There is something quite odd to this when one considers that the film has hired a number of name actors not for their ability to give a role depth but rather for the purpose of getting them to appear as close to the two-dimensional originals as they possibly can.
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000) was a prequel, also from director Brian Levant but with a different cast.

An animated version of "The Honeymooners," "The Flintstones" was a big hit in the 1960's, and thanks to the film, an even bigger hit in the 1990's.
The plot is just a mechanism for the writers and Levant to share in their favorite "Flintstone's" moments, including the dead-on live-action opening that mimics the animated series with accuracy.
Most of the cast members and the production team clock in with their insights and gossip, and even though making the film was a tremendous task, you can tell that everyone had a good time making it.

For conflict, there are the efforts by rich-girl Wilma's snobby mother to break up the romance between Wilma and the blue-collar Fred by pushing her in the direction of the preferable Chip Rockefeller (Thomas Gibson, another TV refugee), who also wants to get Fred out of the way.
The film is awash in the kind of cheap sound effects (bongo flurries, comic xylophone riffs) that marked the cartoon.

As directed by Brian Levant (who helmed the first "Flintstones" film as well as "Jingle All the Way"), the film is all about individual moments and sight gags.
The performances and cast decisions for the major roles are a mixed bag and inevitably will draw comparisons to those in the first film (simply because the viewer won't have much else to do while watching this one).
While it's understood that the film isn't meant to be an Oscar contender and is primarily aimed at kids who will probably enjoy the slapstick shenanigans, fun costumes and overall visual look, it's simply not that good.

Be that as it may, the "modern stone-age family" (Fred and Wilma — and later Pebbles — Flintstone) and their friends and neighbors (Barney and Betty — and later Bamm-Bamm — Rubble) debuted on ABC in 1960, and have been a part of the animation scene ever since.

"The Flintstone" has a lot going for it from a loopy sense of humor and fun performances, to a seamless blend of live- action and effects, both computer-generated and mechanical.
Much to the film's credit are live-action recreations of the animated series' opening and closing credits, right down to the sabretooth Kitty throwing Fred out at the end.
Although I would consider "The Flintstones" to be a "must see" film for anyone who has ever enjoyed their animated antics, I don't think the film will do the kind of repeat business that turns hits like "Jurassic Park" into mega-business blockbusters.

Taking the term "prehistoric" literally, director Brian Levant returns with a film that's a prequel to both the animated "Flintstones" TV series and his own live action, big-screen version of 1994.
Baldwin, who has in most of his films come across as dimwitted as Barney himself, relies on his innate, drop-jawed goofiness to bring the part to life.
Hanna-Barbera's original program was essentially a witty take on "The Honeymooners." "The Flintstones" mined its humor from the same sort of situations in which the Kramdens and the Nortons found themselves, and at the same time pulled off some pretty clever puns of its own.

That film, with John Goodman perfectly cast as Fred Flintstone, did a good job of translating the TV cartoon (1960-66) to the big screen, and with that I was content.
But it worked better than I expected; the film gives us a Flintstone much younger than the husband and father of the first film (and the classic cartoon series), and Addy does a good job in the role.
Brian Levant, who also directed the original Flintstones film, had the challenge of presenting the same characters with an entirely new set of actors.
