DVD Review: Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas
Wilma (Kirsten Johnson of "3rd Rock From The Sun") is a rich girl running away from her family and Betty (Jane Krakowski of "Ally McBeal") is a waitress at the local burger joint who takes Wilma in.
"Viva Rock Vegas" seems content to go along on its own flat pace, and the humor is of a particularly low level, with quite a few lame bathroom jokes.
SOUND: Universal has given viewers the option of watching "Viva Rock Vegas" in either Dolby Digital 5.1 audio or DTS 5.1 audio (the DTS "piano" trailer plays once DTS is selected from the audio menu).

The prehistoric world in "Viva Rock Vegas" is filled with garish colors and modern conveniences that are notably absent in the first film.
Harvey Korman is embarrassing as her husband, while returning cast members Rosie O'Donnell (as the voice of a squid) and Irwin Keyes (as a carnival participant) manage to escape unscathed.
Another supposedly nostalgic touch is having Ann-Margret sing the title song, a riff on "Viva Las Vegas," in which she starred with Elvis Presley.

For everyone who liked the 1994 live-action "Flintstones" film, beware: Everything that made it enjoyable is absent from "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," an unnecessary prequel in which we learn how Fred became a Jedi, and how Barney turned to the dark side.
Anyhoo, "Viva Rock Vegas" follows the courtships of Fred (Mark Addy) and Wilma (Kristen Johnsten) and Barney (Stephen Baldwin) and Betty (Jane Krakowski).
Let's face it, "The Flintstones" wasn't all that funny as a TV show, and the jokes are really old by now.

Movie Review: 'The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas'
Like Goodman, Addy meshes Fred Flintstone with his real-life inspiration, Jackie Gleason in "The Honeymooners," right down to the "hommina hommina hommina." Whichever one he's imitating, he nails the voice.
The plot centers on the romance between working-class Fred and leisure-class Wilma, daughter of the filthy-rich Col. Slaghoople (Harvey Korman borrowing the dotty old man bit from pal Tim Conway) and his ultra-snooty wife, Pearl (Joan Collins, as insufferable as ever).

The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas: Well Rounded Entertainment
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas isn’t an atrocity like Dudley, but it feels terribly besides the point.
The big mistake is "Third Rock from the Sun" star Kristen Johnston, whose double chin and masculine physique make it impossible for her to slip successfully into Wilma's slight frame.
Eye-candy trappings aside, however, the instantly forgettable Viva Rock Vegas is as artificial and insubstantial as the CGI special effects on which it so heavily relies.

Sometimes with the venerable Flintstones franchise, it’s "Yabba-dabba-doo." Only this time with the new film, The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas, it’s "Yabba-dabba-don’t." Perhaps the most appropriate term to describe this putrefied junk is "Yabba-dabba-doo-doo." We’re talking rock bottom in terms of entertainment value here.

Once again tossing out all continuity and traditional Flintstones plotting, this overly stylish film suggests that Wilma was an heiress secretly working as a carhop with her friend Betty and pining away for her prince (while being forced to date Chip Rockefeller) -- among several other extremely contrived plotlines.
It might have done the filmmakers good to remember that The Flintstones became a huge hit in fl and white, and although color is loads of fun and can be visually appealing, it's way overdone in this context of the stone age.

Kids may happily gobble up Viva just because it’s a movie based on a popular cartoon show; and even parents desperate for watchable family entertainment may allow themselves to be seduced by its colorful set pieces and the goofy charm of the cast.
Viva’s Jane Krakowski (Ally McBeal), on the other hand, is a real Betty, and her bubbly, sparkling performance is of the best things about the movie (and it turns out she does Betty’s trilling laugh as well as Rosie).
