Flies breathe via a sprawling network of tiny tubules known as tracheae that pentrate their outer skeleton.
For a small insect, this method of respiration is phenominally efficient, but a fly the size of a human would simply not absorb enough oxygen to use its muscles.
Although the special effects are now showing their age (no fly I've ever found around my house looked anything like that) the gory final scene is still upsetting enough to turn stomachs.

Perhaps, unsurprisingly, while many people saw The Fly as an AIDS metaphor in the then early days of the disease, Cronenberg, in his audio commentary on the disc, dispels that notion, averring that it is about something much simpler and wholly inevitable: mortality.
The film came out in 1986 (and looks it, with bad clothes and even worse hair—oh, Jeff, what were you thinking with that leonine helmet?), so this DVD set is not quite a 20th anniversary edition, but it does coordinate nicely with the release of Cronenberg's latest, A History of Violence.

Although The Fly might be best experienced by someone who is completely unfamiliar with the plot, most people who hear about this film will already be familiar with the premise, plus the title gives it away to an extent, so I suppose it's not too damaging to relay the basics.
The Fly is about the problems that ensue as he experiments on the teleportation of living things.
The Fly is the perfect vehicle for him to stress the dangers of allowing ourselves to play God and tamper with nature; how our primitive machines are no match for the complexities of what they're making attempts to emulate.

As the original 1950s' version of The Fly was set in Montreal, it was appropriate that Canadian David Cronenberg was chosen to co-write (with Charles Edward Pogue) and direct a new adaptation of the story.
Cronenberg's The Fly is an intelligent revision of a much-loved yet cheesy SF monster movie, which dispenses with the flashback structure of the 'classic' film and opts for linear storytelling.

Compared to the facelessness of Cronenberg's previous "mainstream" project, The Dead Zone (1983), The Fly, although a remake, is a very personal film, returning to the obsessional examinations of bodily metamorphosis and scientific experimentation that run throughout the director's oeuvre.
Typical of Cronenberg is the combination of graphic sickness and good humor that accompanies Brundle's metamorphosis, which he is at pains always to treat in a philosophical, questioning manner ("Do you know insects have no politics," he remarks.

The Fly & Return of the Fly DVD review on AudioRevolution.com
Fox has packaged "The Fly" with its first sequel, "Return of the Fly," and the several trailers on the disc (the same ones on both sides) include not only those for the original two movies, but for Cronenberg's version and its sequel.
Unfortunately, someone thought to improve on the original movie, and Philippe winds up with a fly head that's in the same ratio to his body as it was on the fly: it's about three feet across, and looks like something you'd see in a Mardi Gras parade.
But "Return of the Fly" is just another horror movie, certainly not up to the level of the precedent-setting original; that was for adults, "Return of the Fly" is, and always was, for kids -- and uncritical kids at that.

The Fly is a film in which the power is achieved by its roots planted in the genre of drama, but then given a dark twist of terror to achieve its place as one of the few masterpiece horror films of the 1980’s.
The Fly is almost like setting new rules, and designing new rooms to a genre that is believed to only fit in a small confined, almost claustrophobic space.

In a scattershot year for the genre, "The Fly" sits comfortably with "Anguish", "From Beyond", "Gothic", "The Hitcher", "Manhunter" and "Nomads" as one of the best that 1986 had to offer.
It then becomes a nightmare journey for veronica as she is torn between her love for Brundle, and the realisation that the corruption of his genius has given way to a terrifying new insanity.
For what it's worth, Cronenberg's vision of "The Fly" is not a happy one, so don't go into it expecting a rollercoaster ride of gross-out FX, a shallow back story and cardboard cut-out performances.

Castle's screenplay covers some fairly well worn territory, but his dialogue and characters are believable (and enriched by fine performances from his cast of veteran character actors and youthful newcomers), and his direction restrained.
The "high concept" (that a boy can fly if he believes hard enough) is a ready-made moral, but it's only part of a much larger story, an affecting parable about dealing with loss and rediscovering hope.
It's fearlessly sentimental, and not for the cynical—it nearly falls apart at the end, mostly due to a chase scene and a carelessly developed "villain" (the hospital officials who want to take the troubled Eric away from his uncle), but when that triumphant, title-inspiring moment finally comes, it's impossible not to smile.
