Activists on the left and right -- including a 71-year-old Milwaukee nun and an art dealer who told other passengers that President Bush "is dumb as a rock" -- have long complained they were being hassled by airport security.
A 71-year-old Milwaukee nun and peace activist was stopped from boarding a flight to Washington, where she and a group of students planned to lobby the Wisconsin congressional delegation against U.S. military aid to Colombia.
For example, the story said, Sister Virgine Lawinger, the Milwaukee nun, had been stopped not because of her politics but because one of the students in her group had the surname of Laden -- a name the TSA flagged apparently because it is shared by a notorious Islamic terrorist.

On the subject of her flying: Okay, it's explained that the shape of her headgear (probably designed by Lockheed Martin or Boeing), combined with her weight, the winds, and a few other factors combine to allow her to take flight when the wind is just right.
Then again, all those nuns weren't as attractive as Sally Field, very few of them were nearly as pleasant, and not one of them could fly (that would have livened up lunchtime recess).

Efforts by the Wall Street Journal to solve the mystery resulted in an April 22 story concluding that most of the problems innocent fliers experienced resulted from computer systems that were "flagging numerous travelers whose names are merely similar to one of those on the [no-fly] list" for terrorists and criminals.

Watching "The Flying Nun", now almost forty years after it first went on the air it's pleasing to see that the show and its talented performers have lost none of their charm with the passing of time.
In her role of Sister Bertrille, the airborn nun who because of her 90 pound body weight and starched coronet was able to fly, Sally Field was a perfect casting choice in a character light years away from her later famous Oscar winning dramatic performances.
Like "The Flying Nun", that Whoopi Goldberg movie had as the basis of much of its humour very amusing and often non stereotypical portrayals of nuns that managed to remain dignified while piling on the laughs.

 The Flying Nun Summary
The Flying Nun television series soared on ABC from 1967 to 1970, bringing viewers a concept that still seems ridiculous years later.
And, because even a show about nuns needed to have a little sex appeal, Bertrille was admired from a distance by Carlos Ramirez (Alejandro Rey), a wealthy, handsome playboy, owner of a discotheque in town, and patron of the convent.
She could be relied upon to solve any problem that came her way by her ability to catch a passing breeze and fly (attributed to her small stature and heavily starched cornette—the headgear for her habit, not to mention that she only weighed 90 pounds).

THE FLYING NUN would run for 3 seasons earning great acclaim for Field, the cast and writers who managed to keep a dignified and reverent tone to the series while still remaining true to the sitcom mode which the show was presented in.
"The Flying Nun", which premiered in late 1967 has always been a great favourite of mine and really was one of the last of the fantasy comedies which had their heyday in the 1960's.
Despite having a popular success with the short lived "Gidget" television series the previous year it was "The Flying Nun", beginning in 1967 that really brought stardom to a very young Sally Field in the role of the perky and often trouble plagued Sister Bertrille.

Being the only nun with a "jet" cornette (the secret to her ability to become airborne), Sister Bertrille flies in and out of trouble with her canine companion, Horatio.
Of course, the cornette (the headgear a nun wears) wasn't "jet-equipped" (although that's a nice rhyme there!); the secret of Sister Bertrille's airborne action was her slight waist (she was 90 pounds) combined with the size and shape of the cornette let her get off the ground if the wind was just right.
It's been said that it was often a challenge to the writers to come up with reasons why a nun would need to fly around to solve the problems of her, her sisters in the convent, and the people they all care for.

The Flying Nun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Developed by Bernard Slade, it centered on the adventures of a group of nuns in the Convent San Tanco in Puerto Rico.
Another problem the show's producers had to contend with was the fact that during much of the filming schedule of "The Flying Nun's" second season, Sally Field was noticeably pregnant with her first child.
This was a logistical nightmare for a series in which Field's character was supposed to be a religious celibate, and skinny enough to fly away in the wind!

While most of us remember the flying part--and what a great fantasy for kid viewers, especially--the gist of the series focused more about Sister Bertrille's naiveté and of her youthful determination to make changes in her stuffy convent.
