The Forge was founded at the turn of the 20th century to study and experiment with extraterrestrial material and technology and apply it to the security interests of the United Kingdom.
The Forge's first known operation was Project: Twilight in 1913, which involved the infection of human subjects with the so-called Twilight Virus, which incorporated DNA from vampires to create human-vampire hybrids as super-soldiers.
The Forge's chief scientist, Dr William Abberton was mortally wounded and forced to inject himself with the virus.

The God of the Forge is usually depicted as a solidly-built male dwarf with flaming red beard and hair, a forge apron over a bare, muscular chest, and a hammer in one knuckly hand.
Together with Arvins (God of the Hunt) and Queprur (Goddess of Death), Urtengor is one of the three Gods dedicated to the element of Earth.

Greg Bear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His work has covered themes of galactic conflict (Forge of God books), artificial universes (Eon series) and accelerated evolution (Blood Music, Darwin's Radio, and Darwin's Children).
The scientific details in his work are such that he is usually classified as a hard science fiction author, but some of his speculations are not equally rigorous in all of his works.
For example, the mathematics in the Eon series, such as the "pi meter", are dubious at best and The Forge of God interprets the Gaia theory freely in ways that might be considered questionable by most scientists.

After the opening, The Forge of God expands to study the ways other characters face the enemy aliens and the inner transition from centered oneness to centerless manyness that the aliens from the stars represent.

God is not burning out the earthling's sinful nature in a forge, rather nature is burning out the earthling's sinful belief in God in a forge.

For readers of The Forge of God, our main protagonist is someone we already know, Martin Gordon, the son of Arthur Gordon, a major player in the earlier story.
But where The Forge of God affects us in no small part because of its familiar and comfortable setting, and the fear of its loss, Anvil of Stars wrestles with questions about vengeance and justice, roping us into becoming emotionally invested on that level.
However, while I believe that The Forge of God has the potential to appeal to people who are generally not readers of science fiction, Anvil of Stars might be less immediately accessible to anyone who isn't already a devotee of SF.

SF REVIEWS.NET: The Forge of God / Greg Bear
The Forge of God is Greg Bear's best novel and one of the best, if not the best, alien invasion novels written since H.G. Wells got the ball rolling with War of the Worlds.
Long but not overlong, the story is told with a grim and powerful sense of inevitability that gives its climax a tremendous jolt of authenticity and emotional force.
Throughout The Forge of God, Greg Bear makes remarkable storytelling decisions that keep his tale from sloshing through the quagmire of formula predictability.
