		The Fountains of Paradise is a 1979 novel by Arthur C. Clarke.
		Clarke also hypothesizes that religion in humans is a consequence of sexual reproduction, although the idea does not play a central role in the novel.
		The Fountains of Paradise is set in the fictional country of Taprobane, which Clarke has described as "about ninety percent congruent with the island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)".

		ARTHUR C. Despite one or two plot implausibilities, this Hugo and Nebula winner is a beautifully mounted story about the human need to reach — literally — for the stars, and the fine line between genius and megalomania.
		Yakkagala held Kalidasa's immense palace, in which he tried to set himself up as a god, adorning the mountain face with incredible enigmatic frescoes of goddesses, and constructing a lush garden with a series of fountains technologically centuries ahead of their time.
		If Clarke had made more of the religious issue than he did, the book as a whole might have suffered; thankfully, Clarke focuses his energies on the amazing saga of the Orbital Tower, and in so doing, tells a rewarding tale that is nearly as monumental as its subject.

	Arthur C. Clarke's Fountains of Paradise
		While the idea may seem fanciful, the appendix to the novel cites a wide array of scientific literature (mostly Russian) from the mid 20th century discussing the possibilities of such an endeavour.
		The downside to Clarke's approach is that he tends to downplay the more intractable problems of culture and technology, which may have been an easy position for an engineer to take 30 years ago, but which seem to me to be considerably more important and complex today.
		On the whole, The Fountains of Paradise is a light, enjoyable read, if at times a bit dull.

	The SF Site Featured Review: The Fountains of Paradise
		In this context, The Fountains of Paradise is deeply satisfying, for I feel that here Clarke achieved what he was aiming for, and this novel is in the end successful on emotional, mystical, and intellectual grounds.
		The ending is very moving, and it's followed by a beautiful and effective far future coda of sorts, which ties together the themes of the rest of the book.
		I can only retroactively endorse the awards The Fountains of Paradise won, and urge anyone who hasn't read this book to read it: a noble capstone to one of the greatest careers in SF.
