Biography for Christopher Lee (I)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
By the mid-1970s, Lee was tiring of his horror image and tried to widen his appeal by participating in several mainstream films, such as The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970), The Three Musketeers (1973), The Four Musketeers (1974), and the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974).
Lee and Cushing often than not played contrasting roles in Hammer films, where Cushing was the protagonist and Lee the villain, whether it be Van Helsing and Dracula respectively in Dracula (1958), or John Banning and Kharis the Mummy respectively in The Mummy (1959).
When filming his death scene in "The Lord of the Rings", in which he is stabbed in the back, he gave Peter Jackson a long description of what actually happens when one is stabbed in that manner.

 The Four Musketeers
The film was actually shot at the same time as its predecessor, so director Richard Lester adds on some offscreen narrative to refresh the memories of those who might have forgotten the original.
Not only this, but the Musketeers must also protect D'Artagnan and Constance from Milady (After Constance is rescued from the place where she is held), for she plans to wreck horrible revenge on both for humiliating her in the previous film.
Not nearly as much fun as the first film, The Three Musketeers, this conclusion to the story of D'Artagnon, Athos, Porthos&Aramis and their efforts to thwart the machinations of Cardinal Richelieu, de Rochefort, and Milady DeWinter, is much more plot-heavy and somber than the original, and includes some jarring assassinations and murders.

As one of the powerful Four Musketeers (the others were Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet, and Jacques Brugnon), he helped France win its first Davis Cup in 1927, starting its six-year domination of the cup.
For six years he was captain of the French Davis Cup team (on team, 1921-34); the "Four Musketeers" held the cup from 1927 to 1932.

The two are actually the same film, shot simultaneously (in fact, the cast thought they were making one long movie, to the extent that they were *paid* for one movie; they later sued, as well they should have).

The four musketeers -- Athos (Oliver Reed), Aramis (Richard Chamberlain), Porthos (Frank Finlay) and young D'Artagnan (Michael York) -- are still the grand heroes of legend, whose bravery and skill always win out despite overwhelming odds.
One might argue their state is worse, not better, by film's end, but they're still alive and in fairly good circumstances, which beats the alternative planned for them by the conniving Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston) and his lackeys, the swordsman Rochefort (Christopher Lee) and the seductress/assassin Milady de Winter (Faye Dunaway).
There are priceless scenes in this film, such as the duel on ice and the musketeers' picnic on an enemy's bastion.

At-A-Glance Film Reviews: The Four Musketeers (1974)
When Richard Lester was filming The Three Musketeers, he discovered the result was too long for a single film.
At any rate, because the films were made concurrently, this sequel continues the saga in the same off-beat spirit of the first installment and is another fine piece of entertainment.
If at all possible, see this film letterboxed or on the big screen; even though the aspect ratio is not especially wide, the pan-n-scan job is horrific, the frame often focusing on dirt while the action is cropped.

The Complete Musketeers (The Three Musketeers / The Four Musketeers) id
"The Four Musketeers" is the second half of the original novel, and appropriately called "Milady's Revenge." Milady is, unsurprisingly, very peeved that the Musketeers thwarted her in the previous film.
But the film never quite descends to slapstick, and there is plenty of drama and even tragedy, as one of the important characters dies, and others reveal not-so-pleasant secrets.
All four of the Musketeers are outstanding: York has that naive Luke Skywalker vibe, while Finlay is a lovable hothead, Chamberlin a charming rogue priest, and Reed a tormented soul.

Well, it is if you manage to live long enough to develop such a cavalier attitude- and when the sword-trained but naive York heads to Paris to pursue his dream of becoming a Musketeer, it's an even bet as to whether he'll survive or not.
Hooking up with flawed-but-honorable Musketeers Oliver Reed, Frank Finlay and Richard Chamberlain, York becomes embroiled in a plot involving French Queen Geraldine Chaplin, English nobleman Simon Ward, scheming Cardinal Charlton Heston and his one-eyed henchman Christopher Lee, shady Lady Faye Dunaway, and comely klutz Raquel Welch.
The various intrigues that ensue are just the pretext needed to stage scenes of action, slapstick comedy, and romance, all of it filtered through the anarchic viewpoint of "Hard Day's Night" director Richard Lester, who brings a decidedly irreverent flavor to the proceedings.

The musketeers and D'Artagnan find themselves embroiled in court scandal, political shenanigans, possible war with England, and affairs of the heart, but they always find a way out of their troubles – usually accompanied by clanging swords, and the thud of leather on flesh.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS is a rollicking, frolicking, swashbuckling, tongue-in-cheek, complex, exciting, tale of brash, mercenary soldiers, who were,"One for All and All for One," in their pursuit of pleasure, patriotism, and a good sword fight.
Everything about this film is classy: the stars, the costumes, the magnificent sets, the music, and the authenticity is remarkable, right down to the smallest detail.
The second film, also known as MILADY´S REVENGE was less funny, but wove a rousing good yarn of the FOUR MUSKETEERS, supporting their King, in a power struggle against Cardinal Richelieu and Milady.

De Winter is determined to get revenge against the Musketeers, and when she learns that D'Artagnan is infatuated with the lovely Constance (Raquel Welch), she first tries to foil their romance by seducing D'Artagnan herself, and then by persuading Rochefort (Christopher Lee) to kidnap Constance.
She then engineers the assassination of the Duke of Buckingham (Simon Ward), a close friend of D'Artagnan; when word of the Duke's death and Constance's imprisonment reaches D'Artagnan and his comrades, the foursome ride off to rescue the fair lady and see that justice is done against de Winter.
The Four Musketeers was filmed concurrently with The Three Musketeers; it was originally intended to be one film, but when director Richard Lester realized the movie would be over three and a half hours long, the decision was made to release it as two separate features instead.

Four Musketeers, The DVD Review - Time Out Film
The second half of Lester's brilliant The Three Musketeers is a reasonably beguiling, if noticeably padded coda, with the best bits containing in abundance that quality of penetrating period wit which made its predecessor such a delight.
The tone is darker and more oppressive; there are sequences that lapse into boredom; but the scenes involving Dunaway - whether she's lobbing poisoned darts at her lovers or busily seducing her English warder - have a lushly ironic fairytale quality that the movies capture all too rarely.
The annual Time Out Film Guide includes 15,000 films reviewed over the last 36 years by Time Out critics, covering every area of cinema: Hollywood mainstream and B-movie horrors, documentaries and avant garde, French, Far Eastern, classic silents and 1930s comedies.

What makes the difference in the Musketeers movies is director Richard Lester, a funny man who nevertheless took his work seriously, and was held in high esteem for re-inventing the British comedy for the Beatles generation.

The umpteenth version of Alexander Dumas's The Three Musketeers jettisons most of the plot of the original, dummies down the characters (who are already stupid enough in the original), substitutes unbelievable string acrobatics for fighting, and allows only the character of D'Artagnan any real screen time.
The Musketeer does not come close to matching these films or even to such second rank films as the MGM Gene Kelly version (1948).
