The Four Seasons (Vivaldi) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Four Seasons (Le quattro stagioni in the original Italian) is the name given to the four violin concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, Opus 8, No. 1-4.
Penned in 1723, The Four Seasons are perhaps the most popular concertos by Vivaldi and, in fact, they are among the most popular of all concertos in all of music.
In addition to these sonnets, Vivaldi provided instructions such as "The barking dog" (in the first movement of "Spring"), "Languor caused by the heat" (in the first movement of "Summer"), and "the drunkards have fallen asleep" (in the second movement of "Autumn").

VIVALDI: "Four Seasons" Sonnets texts in Italian & English
Despite his stay in Rome and other cities, Vivaldi remained in the service of the Ospedale della Pietà, which nominated him "Maestro di concerti." He was required only to send two concertos per month to Venice (transport costs were to the account of the client) for which he received a ducat per concerto.
Vivaldi transformed the tradition of descriptive music into a typically Italian musical style with its unmistakable timbre in which the strings play a major role.
Each of the four sonnets is expressed in a concerto, which in turn is divided into three phrases or ideas, reflected in the three movements (fast-slow-fast) of each concerto.

The four seasons are highly programatic, vivaldi published poems with the works and even had each line of the poems put where the programatic effect is occurring.
Vivaldi died in 1741; he had lost his fame and fortune and like Mozart was buried in an anonymous pauper's grave.
Vivaldi is known chiefly as a composer of concerto.

Vivaldi, displaying no mean poetic gifts, composed a sonnet about each season, and inscribed the poems into the score, indicating precisely where the events mentioned took place in the music.
In the harsh season scorched by the sun, man and flock languish, and the pine is on fire; the cuckoo begins to call and soon after, the turtledove and the goldfinch are heard singing.

The Italian composer and violinist Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice in 1678 and after his ordination in 1703 embarked on an intermittent career in the service of the Ospedale della Pietà, an institution for the education of orphan, illegitimate or indigent girls, an establishment with a formidable musical reputation.
As a composer Vivaldi was prolific, with some 500 concertos to his credit, in addition to a quantity of works for the church and for the theatre.

Vivaldi was trained for the priesthood and ordained in 1703 but soon after his ordination ceased to say Mass.
Vivaldi was an enterprising orchestrator, writing several concertos for unusual combinations like viola d'amore and lute, or for ensembles including chalumeaux, clarinets, horns and other rarities.
Into this category also fall 'The Four Seasons', with their representation of seasonal activities and conditions accommodated within a standard ritornello form - these are described in the appended sonnets, which he may have written himself.

After a groundbreaking recording of the Four Seasons for Opus 111, in 1992, that made Fabio Biondi one of the leading performers of Vivaldi's violin music, he returns with a new recording of these over-recorded works.
This is a rock and roll version of Vivaldi's concertos; almost a punk version, with all the energy of the Clash hammering out guitar chords and singing about their strife and anger.
One interesting aspect of this recording is that the Four Seasons are played like twelve movements of one long work - the pauses between the concertos are very brief - giving them a much larger scope than when considered as four separate works.

Classical Notes - Classical Classics - Vivaldi's Four Seasons, By Peter Gutmann
In 1725 in Amsterdam, Vivaldi published twelve violin concerti entitled Il Cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (literally, The Contest of Harmony and Invention, although Talbot interprets the title in the sense of a coexistence of formality and fantasy).
Vivaldi himself was reputed to be a daring, "freakish" technician; one of the few accounts of his playing predicted Paganini, by describing his fingers so close to the bridge that there was barely room for the bow.
For their Four Seasons, they use a set of instrumental parts made in Rome in 1740, in which the different harmonies, textures, transpositions and articulation possibly reflect Vivaldi's actual performance practices more accurately than the simplified published version we have come to regard as definitive.

We are also joined by Harvard University professor and musicologist Thomas Kelly, who explores the extraordinary popularity of "The Four Seasons," and their timeless appeal to both performers and listeners.
Kelly explains his ambivalence about the prevalence of "The Four Seasons" as background music in restaurants, stores and elevators, and their perhaps excessive use in soundtracks for film and television.
In fact, Vivaldi was all but forgotten until the resurgence in popularity of these four concertos began in the middle of the 20th century.

BBC - h2g2 - 'The Four Seasons' by Vivaldi
The series of concerti called The Four Seasons, written by Vivaldi in 1726, is arguably one of the most often-heard pieces of classical music.
Vivaldi's original, clearly detailed instructions have the plucked notes played much louder than the melody.
As a result, the listener hears a peaceful theme with a little rain in the background, but Vivaldi wanted the listener to be outside - in the pouring rain - able to see and hear the peaceful interior only faintly above the weather.
