The trailers that Fox have included on this DVD state, "You Have Never Seen Anything Like...The Frogmen!" Another announces, "You Are About To Witness Scenes Never Before Brought To The Screen!" That's as may be but I suspect that there were films produced prior to this one in which underwater cinematography was used.
The Frogmen has enjoyed a very good transfer from Fox, which has issued the film as part of the Fox War Classics range.
The Frogmen may well have been the first time that non-divers saw action beneath the surface of the sea and, in that, it really doesn't disappoint, even earning itself an Oscar nomination for cinematographer Norbert Brodine.

 channel4.com/film - The Frogmen
Directed with flair by journeyman Lloyd Bacon, The Frogmen might have an uninspiring name, but its special effects are remarkable for the time, enabling the film to capture the horror and excitement of men at war like few other movies of its era.
With Norbert Brodine's crisp black-and-white cinematography and William Reynolds' sharp editing lending a classy sheen to the production, the reason The Frogmen succeeds is because of the courage of the real UDT servicemen, whose reliance on primitive technology meant they had much in common with NASA's Mercury astronauts.
Lloyd brings home the Bacon with a fine war film made even better by what can only be described as vintage Widmark.

Media Life - Letters to the Editor
Just as the excellence of D.W. Griffith's 1915 Civil War film epic "Birth of a Nation" sugarcoated its horrendously derogatory images of African Americans, the "post-modern" (i.e., contemporary) know-how of "The Sopranos" glosses over the same derogatory, regurgitated images of Italian Americans as criminals, boors, buffoons, bigots and bimbos.
To put it in perspective: According to a 2001 film study by the Italic Studies Institute of New York, Italian Americans have been portrayed negatively in 69% of some 1,200 Hollywood movies produced since 1928.
Studies have shown that nearly 75% of all movies with Italians or Italian themes produced since the 1920's have shown us to be either gangsters or buffoons.

Brian W. Fairbanks - Writer/Film/Actor Profile: Richard Widmark
It would be followed by an assortment of military and adventure films starring Widmark, including The Frogmen, Red Skies of Montana, and Destination Gobi.
It’s doubtful there is another scene in all of film noir as shocking in its cruelty as this moment in 1947’s Kiss of Death, and it’s doubtful any actor has ever made such a stunning impression in his movie debut as Richard Widmark did as Tommy Udo, the giggling psychopath of this classic thriller.
When film noir was finally recognized as a genre worthy of study in French critics Raymond Borde and Etienne Chaumeton’s Panarama du film americain, it was Widmark’s gaunt frightened face in Night and the City that was pictured on the cover.

June 21: After the Italians had left the Axis, the Italian destroyer Grecale sailed from Bastia in Corsica to La Spezia carrying three speedboats and Italian frogmen and two British chariots, to attack the Italian cruisers Bolzano and Gorizia, which had been taken by the Germans after the Italian surrender.
The chariot seen in the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" is a realistic-looking but non-functioning film prop.
In operation the torpedo was carried by another vessel (usually a normal submarine), and launched near the target.
