The Fugitive (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fugitive was an American television series that aired on ABC from 1963-1967.
The series was conceived by Roy Huggins and produced by Quinn Martin.
A short-lived TV series remake (CBS, 2000-2001) of the same name also aired, filmed in Everett, Washington starring Tim Daly as Kimble, Mykelti Williamson as Gerard, and Stephen Lang as the one-armed man. CBS cancelled the series after one season.

In other words, the (mid-1960s) TV viewer felt perfectly at ease with this particular "outlaw" because what was happening was not his fault.
The series' and the introspective character's success lay largely with the appeal of actor David Janssen's intensity in the part (Janssen's first television hit had been as the lead in the slick Richard Diamond, Private Detective series of 1957-60).
While other series with similar themes followed (Run for Your Life, the comedy Run, Buddy, Run) it is to The Fugitive's credit that it remains one of the more fondly remembered of the 1960s drama series.

The narrative tug of The Fugitive -- four years of running, four years of chasing, four years of being chased -- had been so compelling that a denouement of this kind was impossible to resist.
TV was different in the '60s, you've got to remember.
The original series ranked as high as No. 5 in the yearly Nielsen numbers during the 1964-65 season, its second year on the air; the movie, in which scenery-chewing Tommy Lee Jones (as U.S. Marshal Samuel Gerard) stole the spotlight away from Harrison Ford, was one of the top box-office champs of '93.

This episode, "The Judgement", was seen by more viewers than any single dramatic TV series episode in history, a record that would remain unbroken until the "Who Shot J.R." installment of Dallas in the fall of 1980.
In addition to inspiring a sub-genre of "hero on the run" TV series (notably Branded, Run for Your Life and The Invaders), The Fugitive served as the basis for a highly successful 1993 theatrical film, starring Harrison Ford as Kimble and Tommy Lee Jones as Gerard.
And during the 2000-2001 season, an updated series version of The Fugitive, starring Tim Daly in the title role and Mykelti Williamson as his pursuer, was briefly telecast on CBS.

Sheppard case didn't inspire TV series
The numerous similarities between the fictional "Fugitive" and Sheppard are purely coincidences, Huggins said.
On the series, which ran from 1963 to 1967, Kimble, played by David Janssen, was tried, convicted and sentenced to execution, only to be freed in a train wreck while on the way to the death house.
He pointed out that the series even had to be altered after the first few episodes were broadcast with an embarrassing error.

This never came to pass but may have occurred had the series gone to an originally-planned fifth season, a plan vetoed by David Janssen because he was physically worn out from the demanding shooting schedule.
This and many other shows of the first twenty years or so of TV actually had believable premises, developed characters and strong supporting roles as foil to the lead (Barry Morse's lawman here).

Janssen had two other TV series in the '70s, O'Hara, U.S. Treasury (1971) and Harry O (1974), and appeared in at least one movie with a former Fugitive guest star, namely, the TV tearjerker A Sensitive, Passionate Man with Angie Dickinson.
Before The Fugitive, Janssen starred in an earlier TV series, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, in the '50s, and gave a memorable performance as the Jewish gangster protagonist of King of the Roaring Twenties (1961).
He was also in the TV miniseries Master of the Game (1984), A Woman of Substance (1983), and The Martian Chronicles (1980), and had a part on the short-lived TV show The Adventurer in 1972.

This is not surprising since most TV viewers these days are surprised to hear that there was actually a series before the movie.
True he's Kimble's pursuer but he was simply a man who took his job seriously, not some super prick that has a vendetta against Kimble for reason's that are too ridiculous to believe (yes, many cops can be driven by ego but there's always a motive for that ego -- that's not present here).
For example, most of the dialogue is recycled from the movie and the plot of this series itself is only a slight rewrite of the movie.
