The Funeral (1996 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Funeral is a 1996 film directed by Abel Ferrara starring Christopher Walken, Chris Penn, Annabella Sciorra, Isabella Rossellini, Vincent Gallo, Benicio Del Toro and Gretchen Mol.
The movie concerns the funeral of one of three brothers in a family of gangsters that lived in New York during the depression era.
It is a slow-paced film that details the past of the brothers and their families through a series of flashbacks.

Usually a Madonna death scene in a movie is met with laughter (or walkouts); this time around there was silence, save for the sniffling that could be heard throughout the auditorium.
The movie musical is dead, and I doubt Evita will be its resurrection; I'm not so certain that contemporary moviegoers are ready for films where characters periodically break into song, let alone sing throughout the entire film.
The movie musical is, sadly for this musical fan, pretty much dead, and I don't see this film (or, for that matter, the forthcoming Evita) miraculously reviving the genre.

It is easy to overlook the talent that Parker brought to this movie because of the great performances and the interesting story.
For example, the movie opens with Eva's death (presumably to show us the impact she was to have on her crowds of admirers).
It becomes intercut with another, earlier, more humble funeral, that of her father, at which she is present.

Writer-director Yang doesn't say precisely, but he does give us a precise feeling for the contours of their collective condition, while hinting at the outset that denial and forgetfulness -- the latter a recurring motif in the film's opening stretches -- are involved.
N.J. -- the middle-aged father, who's working for a failing computer company that's bankrolled by a mogul with the style of a gangster -- doesn't seem ever to have loved his wife, Min-min (Elaine Jin), who seems even more alienated than he is working in her own nondescript office.
He's the closest thing this movie has to a protagonist -- though he can't be fully understood without his wife and kids, and his usual lack of awareness of what they're going through prevents him from being a hero.

The theme of this dark story is that if you take a thug, dress him up in a fancy suit and give him a big cigar, you still have a thug.

Though he was the director of that awful thriller, 'Fear City,' Abel Ferrer offers a movie about mobsters that distinguishes it from a decade of far too many mobster-themed movies in that it does not glorify mob life.
The film is centered around the funeral of the youngest, Johnny, who was mysteriously shot to death.
The nature of these characters are particularly interesting in a story that points out the realities of mafia life (for both the mobsters and their wives) as violence begets violence, making for a very intriguing story.

Against this turbulent backdrop, the family's three street-hardened brothers and the women they love are about to be plunged into a deadly confrontation with their enemies, with each other, and with their own dark heritage of violence, madness and murder.
All the gangsters in this film are forced to continually confront their consciences in regard to what they've become; the characters played by Walken and Penn in particular are both extremely reflective, troubled men, and capable, in different ways, of being quite articulate about the moral ground they find themselves on.
Although slow and somber, "The Funeral" is also an unsettling, intense, captivating and impressive movie.

I have read many books about the life of Eva Peron and in every one it mentions the fact that Eva was 5 or 6 when her father died.
As in the movie, her family was not permitted to attend the service as they were Senor' Duarte's "illegitimate" family.
Evita herself wrote: It was on this day that she realised that there were rich and poor and she felt so much injustice about it she decided she would do something about it when she became an adult.
