 Bumper Christmas for NHS Direct
As a retired GP who spent forty years answering calls such as NHS Direct now appears to be revelling in my consolation was that I eventually succeeded in educaiting a fair proportion of my patients to use the intelligence they had to make rational decisions in the future.
According to NHS Direct many callers were "coping with the consequences of overindulgence", with common inquiries including abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
NHS Direct has had its busiest ever Christmas, with a record number of people using both the telephone and online health advice service over a three-day period.

 Guardian Unlimited Online NHS continues open source software trials
The agency said that approximately 550,000 desktop computers in the English NHS are currently running Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office, and that no figures are kept for other kinds of software.
This in turn will make it more likely that the Department of Health, and other public authorities, will in future be able to find enough willing bidders to promote real competition for commercial contracts".
The NHS in England will continue to test free-to-use "open source" software, despite paying to run Microsoft software on some 550,000 desktop computers.
