The Gateless Gate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Along with the Blue Cliff Record and the oral tradition of Hakuin Ekaku, The Gateless Gate is a central work much used in Rinzai School practice.
Although the title The Gateless Gate has become fairly common in English, some have criticized this translation as unfaithful to the original.
A particular source of criticism is the fact that, in "Gateless Gate", the word "gate", occurs twice, implying an obviously paradoxical meaning: a gate without a gate.

 BIROCO.COM ~ The Gateless Frontier
I've already mentioned that the title of the Chinese Zen classic Wumenguan (Mumonkan in Japanese) should be translated as 'The Gateless Frontier' rather than 'The Gateless Gate'.
It is amazing that 'The Gateless Gate' has became the standard translation in the west.
The very absence of a gate is what makes the frontier of the Great Dao hard to find, but once you've found it you can put your strayings from the way behind you in a single step and cross the frontier.

I meant to use the koans as a man who picks up a piece of brick to knock at a gate, and after the gate is opened the brick is useless and is thrown away.
My notes, however, were collected unexpectedly, and there were forty-eight koans, together with my comment in prose and verse concerning each, although their arrangement was not in the order of the telling.

 article14 Eye of the needle
It was the independent knowing-I that created the gate, and when that 'knowing-I' is gone so is the gate, but the knowing remains.
And telling you how to enter the open gate can potentially become the barrier to the discovery that is has always been open.
To suggest stop searching is incorrect, as the search is necessary for the needle to exist, allowing you to discover the illusion of a non-existent eye-I. To suggest that you continue your search is equally incorrect, as it always leads away from what you are attempting to discover.
