Topic: The Gathering (Testament album)

  CD Gallery - Testament
Testament, along with Exodus were the founding fathers of the so-called Bay Area thrash movement of the mid-eighties (other bands in this league include Dark Angel, Heathen, Defiance, Vio-lence, Vengeance Rising, Forbidden, Death Angel, Deliverance, and others).
Since I have all but one of their albums, I would not have needed this disc except for the fact that the brilliant marketing execs at Atlantic decided to include two exclusive cover songs, "Sails of Charon" (originally by the Scorpions) and "Draw the Line" (another Aerosmith song.
Unlike Metallica, who were at one time considered the same style as Testament, they have continued to earn the respect of their fans for staying true to the music style despite trends.

Testament was formed in the San Francisco area in 1983 by drummer Louie Clemente, guitarist Eric Peterson and his friend, Derrick Ramirez, also a guitarist, originally using the name Legacy.
Testament received instant fame within thrash circles and were often compared with fellow bay-area thrash pioneers Metallica.
A new album is expected sometime in 2006, and interviews on the Live In London 2005 DVD suggest that there may be an album written with the classic album lineup after this.

The New Testament, sometimes called the Greek Testament or Greek Scriptures is the name given to the part of the Christian Bible that was written after the birth of Jesus.
The earliest of the books of the New Testament was 1 Thessalonians, an epistle of Paul, written probably 51, or possibly Galatians in 49 according to one of two theories of its writing.

Funeral - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The only prescribed aspects of this gathering are that frequently the attendees sign a book kept by the deceased's survivors to record who attended and that the attendees are expected to view the deceased's body in the coffin.
The viewing typically takes place at a funeral home, which is equipped with gathering rooms where the viewing can be conducted, although the viewing may also take place at a church.
Once the final ceremony has taken place, the march proceeds from the cemetery to a gathering place, and the solemn music is replaced by loud, upbeat, raucous music and dancing where onlookers join in to celebrate the life of the deceased.

 Blistering.com :: Music :: Reviews :: Testament - "The Gathering"
Someone might have told Testament long ago that it was powerfully uncool for an '80s thrash band to cling to life in the '90s, survive crippling and constant lineup changes and up the ante in modern heaviness with each ferocious release.
That Testament has thus far failed to garner deserved recognition as a pioneering heavy act is frightening, considering the derivative, overhyped Korns and Limp Bizkits that saturate the scene and typically get the most publicity.
Cuts on The Gathering spin faster, definitely, and smoke grooves the way Demonic, as a death/doom hybrid, was not built for, and the morph is nothing short of electrifying: 11 distinctly unique numbers covering power thrash to multi-tempoed, creeped-out death rock, and all points in between.

This album is a lot heavier than previous noteable releases, and you can really hear a difference in the vocals and guitar especially.
As with lots of the songs on the album, the vocals fade blanky into the rhythm guitar's blare, which is disappointing due to the great lyrics.
Testament ere and are one of the better thrash bands out there; masters of riffs and great solos, with awesome drumming.

Testament - Satan Stole My Teddybear
Testament is definitely a trooper when it comes to longetivity, but their mistake was in playing the shadow of a better known Bay Area band (no, not Huey Lewis) and compromising the elements that made this record so fun.
Although Testament has existed essentially since the day of time (well, since around 1983 when they were known as Legacy), it only their first three albums that are utterly and completely necessary for any afficianado of thrash metal to own.
In the period of time between 1987 and 1990, the band actually retained the same lineup from album to album and their chemistry is unmatched in the band's history.

Lyrically, "True Believer" reveals the ultimate shortcoming of the album, of "Testament" and of bands that are forever stuck in the mid to late 1980's death metal mode.

The album is a Thrash Metal album, but a good deal of the tracks have elements from other subgenres of Metal.
The music of the album is pretty complex, containing some pretty technical riffs (although not to the extremity of CRYPTOPSY, THEORY IN PRACTICE and their ilk, but compared to the band's peers, the riffs on this album are a lot more complex), and not one second is a waste on the album.

In death metal circles, the players on this album are nothing short of superstars.
As for the record, combining all the best elements of death metal with strong melodies and hook-laden grooves, The Gathering proves that death metal can be catchy, with no loss of power, speed or darkness.
To say the songs are epic is an understatement, as the general synopsis the group tends to describe the album with is Billy's remark that "everybody dies." Songs about world destruction, drug abuse or even old age surface throughout, and Billy's vocals are the perfect parry to Peterson's infectious riff thrusts.

The Gathering is a fast, heavy, and all around stellar metal record that shows heavy metal was anything but dead in the late-90s.
The eleven songs featured on this album show everybody involved playing to the best of their abilities, along with probably the band's most mature and consistent songwriting ever.
Chuck's vocal performance is probably his weakest on the entire album, and the whole song just fails to really captivate me save for the "Heeey, we live in a f*cked up world!" lines.

Testament is perhaps the best--and most consistent--of the Bay area thrashers.
That being said, this album is not quite five stars.
The two things keeping this from being a five-star album are: the drumming is too generic, and Chuck Billy falls into the same patterns for his vocals in almost every song (the major exceptions to this are "Do or Die"--my favorite song--and "Alone in the Dark").

The Gathering: Mandylion - PopMatters Music Review
In 1995, heavy metal, shunned from the mainstream in the wake of the grunge craze, was undergoing an explosion worldwide, the likes of which had never been seen, as bands tested the limits of the genre, pushing the sound to different, yet equally thrilling extremes.
The first two albums by The Gathering, while sporadically interesting, seemed lost, as it felt like the band was feeling their way around too furtively.
The album itself still sounds incredibly fresh ten years later, a testament to both the band’s songwriting, and especially their prescience, as Mandylion still makes all of today’s popular goth bands, from Evanescence to Lacuna Coil, sound stiff by comparison.

The tag "a semi-acoustic album" is attached to the title, and after the blatant fabrications of Finntroll’s last, "acoustic" album, and true acoustic records that were promising but merely so-so (Autumn Blaze), it’s great to have a disk that tells the truth and is utterly spellbinding.
It is the highest testament to the quality of this record that we mention as an aside that it is a live record.
However, what turns out to be the surprise contribution of this record is the way Van Giersbergen’s melodic singing gives old Gathering songs — from the band’s early days when it was a growling, male vocal-fronted doom metal band — new life.
