The Gathering are Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals, Rene Rutten on guitars and flute, Jelmer Wiersma on guitar, Frank Boeijen on synthesizer, Hugo Prinsen Geerlings on bass, and Hans Rutten on drums.
The band retains a healthy dose of heaviness on tracks such as "Strange Machines" and "Sand And Mercury." The historical journey that is "Strange Machines" adds a sci-fi mood to the disc while the glorious "Sand And Mercury," undeniably the highlight of the disc, patiently explores loss and longing within the realm of human relationships.
The Gathering are nearly like Pink Floyd in their ability to create a symphonic sound with passion and sensibility in their songs while avoiding sentimentality.

Definitely the best move this band ever did was booting their previous growling singer Bart Smits and picking the incomparable and refined Anneke Van Giersbergen, who since joining the fold has elevated and added a touch of delicacy to a band that judging form their first releases was anything but promising.
It is not like the music does not have any impact on the listener or any weight on the recording, but judging by how much downtime her voice has in all the 13 tracks included here, I believe there is very little to discuss.
Not every extreme metal band that has opted for exploring different sounds has succeeded, for The Gathering that was perhaps their only choice, their best chance of survival in a cutthroat business, and simply the wisest move.

The Gathering Biography - The Dark Chamber
Although The Gathering isn't considered a Goth Rock band, it has all the elements of the best of them: introspective lyrics, moody melodies, and a good and charismatic singer.
The Gathering was formed in 1989 by the Rutten brothers Hans (drums and percussion), and René (guitar), and the vocalist Bart Smits in Oss, Netherlands.
As their contract with Century Media hadn't finished yet, The Gathering released the live album "Superheat" in 2000, with songs recorded from several shows of theirs in Netherlands and with a list comprising songs from all their albums of the Anneke phase.

Though largely unheard off in the mainstream circles (and this is a shame, believe me), the originality of THE GATHERING inspired numerous other metal and gothic acts to incorporate clean female vocals into their doomy compositions.
The band continues to progress both musically and conceptually with each release and none of their albums sound alike.
The band themselves are perfectionists and into multimedia, and I can’t believe they approved of this release.

Smits was replaced primarily by Niels Duffhues, a strange choice for the band; Duffhues' punk-ish tone was decidedly out of step with the music, and the album was largely written off as a result.
It would appear that the seed had been planted in the band's head to try their uniquely compelling songwriting style with a passionate female vocalist; the result was the addition of the incomparable Anneke van Giersbergen, an incredible singer capable of stretching miles of emotion out of each and every syllable.
The Gathering will be of interest to more than just heavy metal fans: they have the potential to appeal to countless different audiences, from metal to progressive rock to anyone who values excellent songwriting and powerful female vocalists.

Being one of the most influential American thrash metal bands, they were perhaps the most popular band of that scene to not break into the mainstream and see the success that the "Big Four of Thrash" did.
The band quickly managed to increase their exposure by heading out on a successful tour of America and Europe with Anthrax, who were then touring in support of their Among the Living album.
In 2004, the band changed their lineup once again for their summer festival live appearances, and John Allen was replaced by Paul Bostaph, returning to the band for a second stint after a decade's absence.

Metal Storm - The Gathering - Biography
The band's early Celtic Frost/Hellhammer-inspired music was as welcomed as it was primitively heavy, and their transformation into a more atmospherically and euphorically rocking outfit brought even more wonder, amazement and adoration from their growing fan-base.
Expanding on the foundation set by the band's fifth release and first double-album, How to Measure a Planet?, the band's new opus has a heavier overall feel to it, while the intense texturing and astounding progressions of the band's sound are still very present.
At that point The Gathering stood at what could be seen as the first crossroads of their career: They were successful, but nevertheless they felt trapped in a artistically-controlled corner, which was very limited and small due to the high expectations from their fan-base.

Though, thankfully, the band hasn’t decided to disregard the past completely – it is, after all, what made me and many of the 250 people in attendance that night such fans (so much so that some had traveled Grateful Dead-style across the country during the 6-show jaunt.
Two things that are very evident after seeing The Gathering live for the first time: even when the band is mind-numbingly tired, even when they’re forced to play on a stage that, at this point in their career is really way too small, they pull it off for their fans.
