But though The Gathering Storm clearly admires Churchill, it also acknowledges his tyrannical personality and astonishing ego, turning what could be a puff piece into a well-rounded and moving portrait.
THE GATHERING STORM won't teach you all that much about English politics on the eve of World War II, or even that much about Churchill the politician.
In Gathering Storm, Churchill is portayed magnificently by a portly Albert Finney as the egomaniacal, multi-talented genius that he truly was.

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | The making of The Gathering Storm
The three Emmys for Churchill drama The Gathering Storm are a tribute to the formidable talents behind the BBC One film.
In The Gathering Storm, Whitemore chose not to focus on the well-known Churchill of Britain's "finest hour", but rather on the apparently washed-up politician of 1934 - the great war leader's "wilderness years".
It was broadcast in the US and UK at a time when a number of politicians were invoking Churchill's stand on Hitler and Nazism, to bolster their positions on Saddam Hussein and Iraq.

The Gathering Storm | PopMatters Television Review
Anyone who has heard about the 2002 The Gathering Storm at all has likely heard it is about Winston Churchill "the man" (here played by Albert Finney) and his relationship with his wife Clementine (Vanessa Redgrave, and both she and Finney have received rightful praise for their performances).
Though the film leans occasionally toward being a heroic biopic (we know who is good or who is evil, who knows of what he speaks and who is ignorant), it also provides humanizing ephemera about Churchill, elaborating somewhat on the fairly well known fact that he was a moody depressive.
What The Gathering Storm does not do is consider the complexities of war and politics.

I had wanted to speak to you tonight about defense, about the campaign in Afghanistan, and the war against terrorism — to shower you with facts and figures, which would support my contention that, in regard to the defense of this country, three administrations in a row have not done, and are not doing, enough.
I had wanted to do that, but the president of a surrounding college said, wisely, “Remember the occasion.” And I shall, for it is a most worthy occasion, and he is right, it must take precedence over policy, which not only blows with the wind, but disappears with it.
