They escaped the strongholds of the trusts to Southern California, where they laid the foundations of the American movie industry and the Hollywood studio system.
Independence is self-government of a nation, country, or state by its residents and population, generally exercising sovereignty.
The term independence is used in contrast to subjugation, which refers to a region as a "territory" —subject to the political and military control of an external government.

The General (1927 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The General is a 1927 silent comedy about a bumbling Confederate engineer (train driver) who pursues Union spies who steal his beloved locomotive, The General, which incidentally also carries his estranged girlfriend, Annabelle Lee.
Although played for laughs in the film, many of the events actually occurred in a chase through Georgia and Tennessee between trains pulled by locomotives named The General and The Texas (see Great Locomotive Chase for more details on the actual event).
Audiences and critics would later agree with him after re-considering the film, and it is now considered a major classic of the silent era.

In the movie six-year-old Michael Myers brutally kills his older sister on night 1963 and is locked in a institution.
Halloween is generally considered the first of long line of modern-day " slasher " movies though some film scholars (and movie fans) say the credit for this to either Alfred Hitchcock 's Psycho or Tobe Hooper 's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Nonetheless this movie originated a great of the clichés seen in countless low-budget films of the 1980s and 1990s.

Shortly thereafter, Union spies steal The General, and Annabelle happens to be aboard.
This 1927 classic, shot with much attention to authentic detail -- from locomotives to army uniforms -- is a little silly and tedious at times, but remains a great tale, with a majestic train wreck (which started a real forest fire during filming in Oregon!) at its climax.

The General (1927) Starring: Buster Keaton, Marion Mack, Charles Smith - Three Movie Buffs Review
The best moments in the movie, and in fact most of the scenes in the movie, take place with Keaton chasing his stolen train.
One thing that can be said about Silent movies is that with the absence of dialogue, film makers had to rely much more on visual imagery, which Keaton seems to be a master.
The one image that sticks with me most of all is the famous shot of Keaton sitting on the drive-rod of his train, which begins to move while he remains sitting on it.

In 1927, Buster Keaton went to Cottage Grove, Oregon, to film 'The General,' a comic version of the same story.
