The Gilded Palace of Sin is an album by the country rock group The Flying Burrito Brothers, released in 1969.
Like Sweetheart of the Rodeo, The Gilded Palace of Sin was not a commercial success - to date, the RIAA has not even certified it gold.
The most visible example of this is perhaps The Eagles, who took the innovations of Sweetheart of the Rodeo and The Gilded Palace of Sin into MOR territory, yielding financially lucrative results.

Flying Burrito Brothers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Flying Burrito Brothers were an early country rock band, best known for their massively influential debut album, 1969's The Gilded Palace of Sin.
Although the group is most often thought of in connection with country-rock legend Gram Parsons, in fact it endured myriad personnel changes over many years.
Their first album The Gilded Palace of Sin (1969) did not sell terribly well, being a radical departure from anything most of the record-buying public (either rock or country) had ever seen, but the group had a cult following which included several famous musicians, such as Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.

"Gilded" remains an astonishing melange of styles, more original in its conception than the Parsons/Chris Hillman-era Byrds album "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" (1968), and with more (9 out of 11) original songs.
The STONES had leant Parsons their song because they felt he had the most authentic voice to sing it with (plans to have Parsons sing it on FINGERS met the kabash by the record label).

I will not add much to the other assessments of the great (Gram Parsons-era) Flying Burrito Brothers albums collected on this single cd import - it is their first two albums, the classic "Gilded Palace Of Sin" (1969) and the very good followup "Burrito Deluxe" (1970).

In 1969, A&M released The Gilded Palace Of Sin, an album that lived up to its exotic title in every way, merging old-style country harmonies with a modernist backdrop of chiming guitars and sinuous pedal steel.
This was the album Parsons had been threatening to make for years, highlighting both his singular lyrical gift for sad love songs and his creation of a series of dark, Gothic country parables where his Southern morality collided with his dissolute West Coast lifestyle.

As with many seminal sixties albums The Gilded Palace of Sin certainly didn’t worry the established pop culture of 1969 — but it did pave the way for the global domination of the seventies Country-Rock supergroup, The Eagles.

Beginning with his work with the Byrds, Gram Parsons was one of the most influential musicians of the rock era, combining country with rock and paving the way for the countrified Rolling Stones, the Eagles and countless others, including the new wave of alternative country, bands such as Uncle Tupelo, Wilco and Whiskeytown.
After Sweetheart of the Rodeo, which added pedal steel and fiddle to the Byrd's jangling, twelve-string sound, Parsons left the band with Chris Hillman to form the Flying Burrito Bros. and record the masterpiece The Gilded Palace of Sin.
