THE GITS   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-25)
The Gits formed in 1986 in Ohio and moved to Seattle three years later, just as the grunge phenomenon was becoming predominant in the Pacific Northwest.
Despite an antisocial disposition, The Gits eventually became the hub of a rather large musical and social scene.
During the band's four-year tenure in Seattle, The Gits gained a reputation for their uncompromising vision and bluesy street punk aesthetic.

Steve, Mia, Matt and Joe met in 1985 in Yellow Springs, Ohio and formed The Gits in 1986.
The record features a moving rendition of Sam Cooke's soul classic, “A Change Is Gonna Come, remixed versions of their rare, early singles and an acoustic version of Social Love from a benefit concert Mia did November 1990, which precedes the band's version on the release.
The Gits' two records are a testament to the power of their strong friendships and the band's ability to create music that combines intensity, humor and urgency.

On its surface, the idea or memory of the Gits carries with it an undertone of urban darkness and human waste, but the story would be unfairly abbreviated if the killing of vocalist Mia Zapata exclusively defined the group.
Being 75 percent male, the Gits hardly qualify as a girl group, but Mia Zapata embodied the group in the eyes of many of their fans.
The word spread as the Gits embarked on successful domestic and international tours in the early '90s (all without the support of a record label.) In 1992, the debut Frenching the Bully was independently released, and the reviews were almost unanimously positive.

The Gits quickly became popular in the Seattle music scene of the early 1990s, distinguishing themselves by their soulful street punk at a time when "grunge music" was putting Seattle on the map.
In the summer of 1993 The Gits began recording their second full-length album, titled "Enter: The Conquering Chicken." By all accounts the group was positioned to explode onto the national underground rock and roll scene.
The film contextualizes The Gits as part of a loyal and creative community, and explores how they were transformed through the experience of having been a unique and explosive underground rock group for seven years.

Piles upon piles of Preorders were made and then the release day hit and the boxes were nowhere to be seen, much to everyone's dismay(see the MS Hyperpages for the firsthand account of one such fan).
This new GitS 2 became the standard GitS 2 in subsequent releases(with a 24-page epilogue tagged on and a rather explict scene taken out preemptively by Shirow for the mass market release), and what came before was basically forgotten.

But just as The Gits were poised to explode onto the national music scene, an unfathomable tragedy struck.
In 2003, one year into filming "The Gits" documentary, a swab of saliva DNA left on Zapata's body solved the ten-year mystery which still haunted her friends, family, and fans since the day of her death so long ago.

Splendid E-zine reviews: The Gits: Enter: The Conquering Chicken
Format Reviewed: CD The Gits' second album, hastily finished after Mia Zapata's death in 1993, has now been cleaned up, remixed by Jack Endino and augmented with nine bonus tracks.
It's hard to separate what you hear from what you know, and maybe if the Gits' lead singer hadn't died during the recording of Enter: The Conquering Chicken, tracks like "Precious Blood" and "Drinking Song" wouldn't have such an aura of desperation.
It catches a volatile, self-destructive artist dancing on the edge of the abyss and knowing it, singing "my precious moment is almost dead / come take my hand/it's cold as hell." It's strong stuff, 80 proof suffering distilled for your delectation -- and if it burns you, imagine what it did to Zapata.

The Gits were part of the burgeoning grunge/punk scene in the Pacific Northwest, but were closer in sound and spirit to riot grrl bands such as Minneapolis' Babes in Toyland, Los Angeles' L7, and Bikini Kill, from Olympia, Washington.

Now more than ten years old, the Gits' first album spits and hisses like the day it was born.
Zapata wrote the band's lyrics, and it was clear that she took no prisoners and made no compromises, brewing a tough cocktail of defiance and vulnerability.
You have to wonder how she would have felt about this, because there is nothing victimish about her music, which is as strong and honest and self-assured as anything ever sung by a woman.

The Seattle Times: Arts & Entertainment: "The Gits" explores punk family and tragic fate of Seattle rocker
The Gits are remembered for the murder of their lead singer, Mia Zapata, in 1993 and the search for her killer, who was finally arrested a decade later.
This rather crude, amateurish documentary is not so much about her murder, however, as it is about the Gits as a substitute family for her and a close-knit circle of like-minded musicians and friends, all living in a run-down old house at 19th and Denny.
The 75-minute film shows how the Gits held onto a small cult following here while the rest of the Seattle music scene was obsessed with grunge, which the Gits steadfastly rejected for their own brand of punk rock.

After the murder of singer Mia Zapata in 1993, the remaining Gits decided to make a change and formed Evil Stig ("Gits Live" backward) with Joan Jett to record an album and perform a benefit concert in 1995 to the memory of Zapata.
Before the Gits' second album, Enter: The Conquering Chicken, could be completed, lead singer Mia Zapata was brutally raped and murdered, lending an atmosphere of solemnity to the proceedings that might not otherwise be so prevalent.
Evil Stig was formed by Joan Jett and the Gits (bassist Matt Dresdner, drummer Steve Moriarty, guitarist Joe Spleen) after that band's lead singer, Mia Zapata, was raped and murdered in Seattle.
