This singular lack of interest in the Glebe area as farming land was to persist for almost a hundred years when it first became part of urban Ottawa, possibly because of the poverty of the land which is mostly sand and glacial till.
About the same time as the granting of the glebe lot H to the Church of Scotland in 1836, the Mutchmor family acquired lot I to the south, but they did not stay for long, moving to the United States in 1839, where economic opportunities, as is so often the case, seemed to be better.
The architecture of the Glebe is as eclectic and varied as its population.

Only weeks after American independence was secure, a group of Episcopalians met secretly at the Glebe House to make a momentous decision; to take part in the building of a new nation while upholding their religious heritage.
As plans were discussed to tear down the house, it was saved by the Seabury Society for the Preservation of the Glebe House, which repaired the building, began collecting furniture, and raised funds to ensure continued operations as a museum.
The Glebe House was restored in 1923 under the direction of William Henry Kent, pioneer of early American decorative arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

“The Glebe Disaster was a coal dust and firedamp explosion caused by shotfiring.
Washington "Glebe" Colliery, usually known as the Glebe Pit, was established only four years ago, the shafts being sunk through the surface deposits by the freezing process, and is one of two collieries, the other and much older colliery being known as the F. Pit, owned by the Washington Coal Co., Ltd.
There are two shafts at the Glebe Pit both sunk to the Low Main seam at a depth of 114 fathoms, passing through the Main Coal seam at 94 fathoms and the Maudlin seam at 104 fathoms.
