In the Spring of 1694 a new Regiment of Infantry was raised by Col. John Gibson, Lieutenant Governor of Portsmouth.
In the 17th century, regiments were the personal property of their Colonels, and thus the new regiment became known as Gibson's Regiment of Foot.
In 1782 the Regiments were linked for recruiting purposes with specific parts of the country, and the 28th and 61st were given the subsidiary titles of the North and the South Gloucestershire Regiment respectively.

It was normal for a regiment to arrive at Malta in one, two or three divisions, possibly over a period of weeks.
When a regiment sailed from Malta after a tour of duty, some sick men were often left behind, and these men may have died say six months later when the regiment was back in England, or was based elsewhere in the world.
Needless to say many injured or sick men from such conflicts were brought to Malta without their regiments, so again the regiment is shown as serving elsewhere, whereas the soldier may have died in Malta.
