Noddy agreed so the three then asked Jim Lea if he wanted the job, but meanwhile the N'Betweens were contracted to play a number of bookings with John Howells and Mick Marson who were still officially part of the group.
It was a frustrating arrangement for Noddy Holder and came to a head in June 1966 when The N'Betweens were sent to Newquay in Cornwall for some bookings and ended up playing a show in Plymouth without Howells.
In early 1967, The N'Betweens recorded some songs at Abbey Road Studios in London with Pink Floyd producer Norman Smith but the tracks remained unreleased and it would be two years before the band next entered a recording studio.

The Go-Betweens are a critically-acclaimed cult act famously summarised by Village Voice critic Robert Christgau thus: “Robert Forster and Grant McLennan are the greatest songwriting partnership working today.” The Go-Betweens toured overseas numerous times and produced such indie hits as Cattle and Cane (1983) and Streets of Your Town (1988).
The Go-Betweens are one of the most internationally influential indie rock bands from Australia, formed by guitarists Robert Forster and Grant McLennan in Brisbane in 1977.
Princess Caroline of Monaco wrote to Robert Forster recently to say how much she loved their last album which she bought after she heard a song about herself on the radio called ‘Caroline and I.’.

Both the Birthday Party and the Go-Betweens moved to London in the early 80's, achieving considerable commercial success and widespread critical acclaim.
The Go-Betweens had just relocated to Melbourne from Brisbane and Cave ruled Melbourne as lead singer of the Birthday Party.

It took a while for the Go-Betweens to click for me, but once they did, it didn't take me long to buy up pretty much their entire discography (although I'm still behind on the solo albums from the years before the band reunited).
Grant McLennan of the Go-Betweens died recently, in case you didn't know.

Noddy Holder took a job in a car parts firm to the dismay of his teachers who wanted him to stay on at school for 'A' levels, but Noddy wanted to "turn professional" and the Phantoms became The Memphis Cut-Outs.
Noddy's day job enabled him to purchase a better guitar and amplifier and he also picked up additional guitar technique from Roy Brown who played with a well known local group called The Redcaps.
