 July 2004
For the Government of Chad, the Janjawiid are emerging as an identifiable enemy, and it is keen that the GoS acts on its promises to disarm and neutralise the militia.
An estimated 5,000 Janjawiid have been absorbed into the PDF and police, apparently representing the majority of the ‘new’ police despatched to Darfur by the GoS.
Pressure is mounting through the UN and EU and in the U.S. for vigorous action against Sudan, resulting in a UN Security Council resolution (due later today) demanding that the GoS rein in the militias within a month, but thus far without a plan for a comprehensive settlement of the conflict.

USAID Sudan: Bombardment of Civilian & Humanitarian Targets
Furthermore, GOS aerial bombardments raise significant security concerns with OLS officials that often lead to the UN suspending operations to an insecure area.
In addition, the abduction of humanitarian staff and killing of relief workers has a direct relationship to the GOS bombardment of civilian and humanitarian targets because GOS bombardment appears to be part of an overall Government policy on restricting humanitarian access.
In November, December, and January, separate US delegations, including SE Danforth, engaged GOS and SPLA leadership on the need to cease attacks on civilian and humanitarian targets.

But it is emphatic that the overwhelming majority of the abuses have been committed by the GoS, and the Janjawiid, operating under the direction of the GoS.
Previous attempts by the GoS to mobilize Darfurian leaders to its side had not worked, and on this occasion the GoS blocked the original delegation from Khartoum and instead sent its own handpicked individuals, including many Janjawiid leaders (despite the fact that they are officially debarred from international travel by the UNSC).
This has the significant advantage that the political demands of the Janjawiid can be identified.

The only outposts near Juba still under GOS control (at the time of writing) are Rejaf and Rokon.

Following this attack, GOS military forces and Jingaweit militia initiated a more coordinated campaign of violence against civilian populations, including aerial bombardments to kill, maim, and terrorize civilians who the GOS claimed were harboring opposition forces.
Despite the ceasefire, reports from the field indicate that GOS and Jingaweit violence and harassment against civilian populations has continued in all three states of Darfur.
Throughout late 2003, armed conflict intensified, as GOS military and Jingaweit clashed with the two main opposition groups -- the SLM/A and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) -- in Darfur.

The Bangles: Doll Revolution - PopMatters Music Review
Like the Go-Gos before them, the Bangles suffered for their gender in critical terms and they were taken less than seriously as rockers and songwriters than they should have been.
Calling the Go-Gos and the Bangles "great all-girl bands" may seem a compliment, but when viewed within the context of this gender bias, it becomes clear that it has other meanings that have nothing to do with the music.
Pushing the Bangles (and the Go-Gos) to the margins has made it easy to forget how strong a band they were -- and still are, as evidenced by their latest, Doll Revolution.

The current increased military operations by both the GOS and SPLA, widespread civilian displacement in northern Bahr el Ghazal and Western Upper Nile, and restricted humanitarian access due to GOS flight denials, mirrors the pattern of events that led to the humanitarian catastrophe in Bahr el Ghazal in 1998.
Recent reports indicate that the cease-fire continues to hold, and that people are moving freely between GOS and SPLM areas.

The SPLA offensive began at the end of the dry season, in March, with co-ordinated attacks on Government of Sudan (GOS) garrisons between Kaya (on the Ugandan border) and Yei (the heart of the agricultural belt) in central Equatoria.
Five days into the offensive and three days after the capture of Yei, the GOS was persisting in promoting the propaganda that they were warding off an invasion by “Ugandan troops” at Kaya, but no mention had been made of the SPLA offensive.
