The Gods Themselves is a 1972 science fiction novel written by Isaac Asimov (ISBN 1061500534).
The mature alien's name, Estwald, was perhaps inspired by German-Russian Wilhelm Ostwald (1853–1932), inventor of the Ostwald process — a key development in the production of fertilisers and explosives.
Asimov's inspiration for the title of the book, and its three sections, was a quotation by Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805): "Mit der Dummheit kämpfen Götter selbst vergebens." ("Against stupidity the very gods themselves contend in vain.")

The Gods Themselves is a novel in three parts, each somewhat self contained while at the time inter-related and even somewhat interactive.
Part one takes place on a near future Earth and reveals how one not-particularly talented scientist came to be the Father of the Electron Pump, a newfangled invention that uses matter passed between our universe and a parallel universe to generate immense amounts of power at little cost.

The Gods Themselves (1972) was his "comeback" SF novel, welcomed by both Hugo and Nebula awards.
The novel is divided into three stories, "Against Stupidity," "The Gods Themselves," and, "Contend In Vain?" Against Stupidity starts off on Earth with an Earth scientist struggling against complacent and pompous professors to prove his Earth shaking discovery.

 Review of The Gods Themselves
The problem is this: Structurally, The Gods Themselves isn’t so much a single novel as a trilogy of novellas.
The middle third (ironically also called “The Gods Themselves”) is absolutely brilliant and without a doubt one of Asimov’s best half-dozen pieces of writing.
Although the brilliance of “The Gods Themselves” boosts enormously the impression of the entire book, that is offset to a large extent by the unevenness itself.

In this novel, Asimov creates a totally believable alien race, complete with three sexes (and deftly handles their mating or lovemaking with sensitivity and creativity.) As you can read from the jacket of The Gods Themselves, something bad is going to happen to Earth and only three "people" know about it--an Earth scientist, an alien, and someone from the Moon.
What is really unique about this book is that it is basically three different stories that are tied together with only the common thread that the main character of each story knows of this imminent disaster that will befall Earth.
I gave The Gods Themselves four stars because the book is good, but not really anything to write home about.
