Gold bug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gold bugs are also often associated with attempts to return to the gold standard monetary system and many like to point out what they perceive as the shortcomings of fiat money.
Recently, gold bugs have pointed to rapidly rising oil prices and the unwillingness of China to significantly de-couple the value of its own currency (the renminbi) from the US dollar as complementary rationales for purchasing and holding gold.
A digital gold bug uses private digital gold currency, in preference to government issued fiat currency, for reasons such as personal liberty, privacy, or lack of trust in government monetary policies.

Paul van Eeden's Weekly Column on Kitco
In Poe’s story, called “The Gold Bug”, the main character is a moody chap by the name of Legrand, who discovers a rare “gold bug” (a beetle).
After being bitten by the gold bug, Legrand leads the narrator on a treasure hunt, which, in the end, is fruitful, netting a large chest filled with gold and precious jewels.
The term “Gold Bug” is still used to refer to supporters of the gold standard and investors who buy gold, which, I guess, makes me a gold bug too.

Money and literature: Edgar Allan Poe
Though it is a kind of detective story, "The Gold Bug" isn't related or similar to the famous trilogy of detective stories in which C. August Dupin is the protagonist.
But what makes "The Gold Bug" highly valuable (a literary work of art), rather than merely entertaining (a humbug) is the fact that encrypted within it is a very sophisticated set of meditations on the subject of money.
Their objection was based on the idea that gold, unlike paper, is inherently valuable, that is, valuable even when it isn't properly inscribed or indited with certain images, words and symbols by a bank or the government.

The Gold Bug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gold Bug is a story of a strange man who seemingly goes mad after finding and being bitten by a bug thought to be made of pure gold.
After much doubt on behalf of the narrator, the once-seemingly insane man does find a treasure, buried by the infamous pirate "Cap'n Teedge," that is estimated by the narrator to be worth about fourteen million dollars.
Once the treasure is safely secured, the man goes into an elaborate explanation of how he knew about the treasure's location, based on a set of occurrences that happened after the discovery of the gold bug.

The original Fisher Gold Bug is probably the best known and one of the most successful nugget hunting metal detectors made.
As with other gold hunting detectors, I began my testing of the Gold Bug 2 at home using several conventional buried targets (miscellaneous coins and pieces of lead), gold nuggets, hot rocks and different types of soil to simulate real-world conditions I have experienced in the field.
Tony took the Gold Bug 2 to a nearby dirt bank that had been previously hunted by several people and in fewer than five minutes he had found a nugget.

First, a gold standard would have all the disadvantages of any system of rigidly fixed exchange rates--and even economists who are enthusiastic about a common European currency generally think that fixing the European currency to the dollar or yen would be going too far.
Since the dollar was de-linked from gold in 1971, the Dow has risen about 700 percent, while the prices of the goods we ordinarily associate with the pursuit of happiness--food, houses, clothes, cars, servants--have gone up only about 250 percent.
In terms of the ability to buy almost anything except gold, the purchasing power of the rich has soared; but Wanniski insists that this is irrelevant, because gold, and only gold, is the true standard of value.

We may never know the exact thought process, but this much is clear: For that decade, when the gold price was rising, Greenspan was raising the federal funds interest rate, just as though he regarded gold as a leading indicator of inflationary risk.
In 1967 he penned a passionate paean to gold"Gold and Economic Freedom" — which was published as part of an anthology of Ayn Rand's laissez-faire capitalist essays.
Although the gold standard could hardly be portrayed as having produced a period of price tranquility, it was the case that the price level in 1929 was not much different, on net, from what it had been in 1800.

A reading of The Gold Bug Variations informed by Derrida's theory of the post thus illuminates both the narrative process and the theme of transmission which is the ultimate statement of the text: a message about the relation of structure to system, of location to signification, and of sending to delivery.
The genetic connection we are particulary interested in here is one between Franklin Todd and Jan O'Deigh, principal characters in Richard Powers' 1991 novel The Gold Bug Variations and three pieces of mail that are transmitted or disseminated during the course of the narrative.
The correspondence between Franklin Todd and Jan O'Deigh in Gold Bug might be understood as a mutual positioning for transmission and interpretation.

Richard Powers Reviews: Gold Bug Variations
Includes Gold Bug Variations as the best novel of the year.
In Richard Powers' 1991 novel THE GOLD BUG VARIATIONS, a peculiar barrenness proliferates across the time span of the story: two of the three female characters are sterile and the central male is deliberately celibate.
Drawing upon notions of translation, mutation, and variation, this paper considers parallel transmissions of coded material and suggests that textuality may be the only hope for these characters, that textuality permits a virtual reproduction which encodes narrative replication as the characters' collective genetic stake in the future.
