The Golden Age of Grotesque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Golden Age of Grotesque is an album by Marilyn Manson released in 2003.
The Golden Age of Grotesque, viewed by many long-time fans has been mildly disregarded, and its main ideas lost.
The most enduring theme is most notable in the single, "This is the New Shit." The song was seen as poppy and as Manson's attempt to sell to the masses, but on careful listening, its an indictment of that very idea.

Show & Tell - Marilyn Manson, "The Golden Age of Grotesque" CD review
Weimar Berlin, the Degenerate artists, Oscar Wilde, the Viennese Actionists, the Golden Age of Hollywood, the McCarthy era...
"Golden Age" starts off with "Theater," just over a minute of preamble, setting the gears and wheels [literally and aurally] of Marilyn's new [borrowed] age of decadence in motion, and moves directly into the anthemic "This Is The New Sh*t," one of many songs with a "chant-with-me" premise.
It is clear on "New Sh*t" that not only is Manson bored with the general malaise that is today's music scene, but he's quite tired of his own pretentions as well.

He believes in what he does, he works hard not only with his music but also on his looks, paintings and lyrics and he is also a very creative thinker who uses his work to attack the morals and ethics of a world drenched in hypocrisy in every way he can.
"The Golden Age Of Grotesque" was inspired by the underside of Weimar Berlin around 1930 and this is a period in European history that Manson is obviously a big fan of.
It is darker, more electronic, heavier and more accessible than most of the past releases from the grotesque man in fl.

Marilyn Manson: The Golden Age of Grotesque - PopMatters Music Review
On The Golden Age of Grotesque, his first recording since one of the most controversial elections in US history, Manson shows that his perpetually changing attitude has embraced the profound shifts in global consciousness that have developed in the meantime, but not necessarily in the way that we might've expected.
Instead of delivering a scathing commentary on the political state of affairs, Manson has traded in most of the focus inherent in his previous records for a more generic meditation on rebellion and sexuality that substitutes cold disaffection and self-aggrandizement for passion.
Which brings me back around to Manson's "conservative president" statement and the fact that it'd be much easier to respect his point if he had delivered a record that showed his art to be flourishing, instead of mining his pretensions to their basest levels.

VOIR.CA - Montréal - Disque - The Golden Age of Grotesque de Marilyn Manson

Three years later, he unleashed his fifth album, The Golden Age of Grotesque, and he still seemed out of step with the times, but there was a difference -- he sounded comfortable with that development.
After all, The Golden Age is designed to be a modern update of German art, vaudeville, and decadent Hollywood glamour of the '30s, all given a thudding metallic grind, of course.
