When her second novel, The Good Earth, was published in 1931, Pearl Buck became famous throughout the world for her moving story of the joys and tragedies of the Chinese peasant farmer Wang Lung and his family.
The Good Earth was published in 1931, and in 1935 republished as a one-volume trilogy entitled House of Earth with its sequels Sons (1933), and A House Divided (1935).

If we adopt the Hebrew chronology, the date of the destruction of the Good earth by the Flood would be 2348 BC, because Christ is believed to be born 4 BC, and Creation would be dated 4004 BC (this is the famous Ussher chronology).
Fifth, the earth's crust is not a single shell, but is broken into at least a dozen major pieces ('plates') and these points of separation are characterized by volcanic activity.
Both these events were major earth events that involved the breakup of the earth's crust with terrific force, the fluidization of the rocks beneath and the slippery movement of the pieces at great speed propelled by the forces of separation.

The Good Earth is a good picture to toss up at PC folk who can't stand seeing anything portrayed in terms unacceptable to modern attitudes.
The Good Earth doesn't exactly end in laughter but it does shift the tone of the story -- the locust battle not only brings Wang Lung back "down to Earth," it inspires him to heal his differences with his sons and his old friend Ching (Ching Wah Lee).

In The Good Earth she presents a graphic view of a China when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings for the ordinary people.
The Good Earth is an excellent book, deserving of the acclaim it has received through the years and surely deserving of the Pulitzer Prize it won in 1932.
The Good Earth is also an Improbable Story, as common sense would suggest that the first-person account of a male Chinese farmer told by an American woman "shouldn't work." Neither should the dialogue style, which defies description.

In the 30s and 40s, MGM had a penchant for (then) contemporary Chinese-oriented stories ('The Son-Daughter', 'Dragon Seed', 'Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo', etc.), and whether this was a preference, or whether there were just a lot of Chinese-design sets to keep occupied at the studio, the results were strangely moving.

Pearl Buck (1892-1973) wrote THE GOOD EARTH in three months, based on her observations of Chinese life and culture while she lived in China as the daughter of American missionaries.
Buck understands its origins and its importance to the Chinese, but it is clear that when O-lan, herself risen from poverty and therefore with unbound feet, decides to bind the feet of her daughter, the family has truly succumbed to the debased values of the wealthy.
THE GOOD EARTH won the Pulitzer Prize when it was published, and Buck received the Nobel Prize in 1938, largely on the strength of this powerful novel.

Over the years, their life together is threatened by starvation, locusts, uncontrollable mobs, greed, and lust, but the land proves to be their anchor, steadying them in times of trouble and reminding them of what's really important.
As a result, The Good Earth may seem quaint and old-fashioned to contemporary viewers (there's also the fact that you can pick out all of the main characters because they're the only ones played by Caucasian actors, but that's a different discussion altogether), but it's a classic for good reason.

THE "inland empire" is one name for the twenty-seven states drained by the river system that stands like a great tree in the center of a map of this country, its roots in the Gulf of Mexico, its topmost twigs across the Canadian border.
If mankind cannot devise and enforce ways of dealing with the earth which will preserve this source of life [the soil] we must look forward to the time—remote, it may be, yet clearly discernible—when our kind, having wasted its greatest inheritance, will fade from the earth because of the ruin it has accomplished.
The extent of our reckless destruction of the soil is revealed by Erosion Service estimates, which reveal that 3 billion tons of good earth are washed out of fields, pastures and temporarily idle land every year.

The results of the experiment convinced Dolan that years of applying chemical pesticides and fertilizers had stripped the soil of its richness and that the resulting dull grapes were affecting the quality of Fetzer's wine.
