  ‘The Good Son’ (R)
In "The Stepfather" and "Sleeping With the Enemy," Ruben showed a keen eye for the seismic fissures in the foundation of the so-called "average" American family.
By design, the film is meant to show Culkin in a vastly different light, but from conception it seems wrongheaded and even cynical.
"The Good Son" is rated R for violence and language.

They went from doctor to doctor, until finally, in 1980, their son’s condition was diagnosed as ulcerative colitis—a chronic inflammatory disease of the large intestine that slowly destroys the colon.
Jamie’s condition continued to decline, and by January 1993, he was essentially living at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, under the care of Byers W. Shaw, Jr., M.D., one of the nation’s leading transplant surgeons.
Beautifully shot and deeply moving, the film interweaves the stories of four transplant patients with those of two families who donated the organs of lost loved ones.

Though being Jewish makes her automatically an "Other" in her society, one of the interesting things about this film is that it is about the life of a woman who, for all intents and purposes, led a perfectly ordinary life for her time and place.
The film starts when Sophie (played by Karin-Lise Mynster) is in her late twenties, the loving, still unmarried, only daughter in a comfortable bourgeoise family whose Swedish father and Danish mother (Erland Josephson and Ghita Norby) are totally and endearingly in love with one another.
People's ordinary lives don't read like film plot summaries, there is no dramatic high point followed by a resolution, but there is a kind of inevitable cycle and it's this rhythm of life that this film captures.

The Good Son review (1993) Macaulay Culkin - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
Perhaps the rating was due to the fact that Culkin's biggest fans are primarily children, many of whom had already learned to emulate his behavior from the Home Alone films, and parents would have been concerned about the possibility of kids acting like their role model when he plays an amoral psychopath.
Regardless of the ratings decision, The Good Son isn't really a film that strikes home with any particular audience, except save for schlock thriller junkies, as the boring story and lack of quality scares keep this one firmly grounded by routine formula plotting and overwhelming predictability.
The production of The Good Son was troubled from the get-go, originally intended to be made back in the late 1980s, when such fare was popular, with such films as Fatal Attraction and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle scoring high returns at the box office.

Part of the problem may be that the guilt and grief are never well-presented, and it's difficult to understand why Mark comes to believe that his aunt is somehow the reincarnation of his mother, whose dying words to him were that she would be with him forever.
If anything, this element makes THE GOOD SON even less believable than it already is. The ending of the movie is actually clever, which is a surprise given the routine conclusions to so many thrillers, but those few good minutes do not save the movie.
From the red-clay backdrops of Nevada to the frosty winterscapes of New England, THE GOOD SON is beautifully photographed (by cinematographer John Lindley), but that's one of its few positive points.

Based on an original screenplay by Ian McEwan (who disowned the film), the story concerns young Mark (Wood), who comes to stay with his aunt and uncle and gradually discovers that his cousin Henry (Macaulay Culkin) is psychotic.
