I suppose it was bound to happen sooner or later, but since I never saw the original feature film from the 1970s it seemed new enough for me and featured a new teleplay by Neil Simon adapted from his original screenplay.
To make fun of meditation is almost as bad as making fun of someone’s religion and no one likes their spiritual beliefs to be trampled on in jest onscreen no matter how exotic it might seem.
That aside, “Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl” is an entertaining love story that is well worth checking out when it makes its Three-Play Weekend World Premiere on Friday, January 16, 2004, at 8pm (ET/PT), Saturday, January 17, 2004, at 8pm (ET/PT), and Sunday, January 18, 2004, at 8pm (ET/PT).

One day, the girls come home to find Tony gone to Europe, and Tony has in turn sublet the apartment (unbeknownst to Paula) to someone else: Elliot Garfield (Jeff Daniels), another actor that Paula initially hates before romance finally blossoms.
The exchanges between the two of them are cute, and Eisenberg captures the wise-beyond-her-years feel ("you were never four-and-a-half...you were born 26," Paula tells her daughter) that Quinn Cummings had embodied so well in the original.
Strong performances from the leads and a tight script make it a solid viewing from my end, and I think it's at least as good as the original, which is hard to do these days.
