Many soundtracks have become separate entities from the films with which they are engaged, as they are both products of the films as well as works of art to be taken on their own merit.
The soundtrack for Titanic broke numerous records, the most-well known being that it is the most popular and financially successful soundtrack in all of Hollywood's history.
It is fair to say that for every soundtrack containing songs that take the radio airwaves by storm, becoming so popular that they are no longer associated with the film, there are many that capture the film's essence perfectly.

The Graduate is one of my favourite films and I think one of the things that makes this film so good is the soundtrack.
This is a combined soundtrack between three artists, the main songs coming from Simon and Garfunkel, with additional material from a great jazz composer, David Grusin.
This soundtrack really shows off his talent for writing songs in different styles, from the fluidity of 'Singleman Party Foxtrot' to the 60's funked-up jazzof 'on the strip'.

The Graduate offers quite a few terrific laughs and remains funny through repeated viewings, mainly because many of the amusing bits result from the nuanced performances; the jokes themselves don't seem that funny, but the way they're acted does.
If one closely examines the film, one could easily pick it apart for various overly stylized parts and other aspects that could detract from its truth, but the picture flows and holds together so well as a whole that such criticisms are largely rendered meaningless.
Overall, the image of The Graduate is a bit of a crap shoot, but the film remains consistently watchable.

Actually the version of The Graduate currently running on Broadway is based both on Calder Willingham and Buck Henry's brilliant screenplay and on the slightly less brilliant Charles Webb novel on which the screenplay itself was also based.
You might then think that this is a soundtrack, sorta like what you'd expect to get from a movie -- and you'd be getting closer, but still not quite on the mark.
To be fair, the stage version of The Graduate was developed by a bunch of Brits, who probably didn't realize how much American audiences have had these watershed songs of the '60s rammed down their collective throats over the years.

But you're not here to hear me go on about the movie; you want to know about the soundtrack.
I'll forego reviewing the David Grusin instrumental tracks and stick to the Simon and Garfunkel music, and I won't be reviewing songs in relation to their contexts in the film - it's purely the sound I'm concerned with here.
As far as I can tell, it's higher-pitched than the original, which seems to be for two reasons: there's more emphasis on Art's voice, and I believe it's in a higher key than normal.

The film also remains surprisingly undated, predominantly, I suppose, because of Benjamin's complete and utter oblivion to 60s society (dodgy haircut aside, he fits none of the drug-addled flower-loving free-shagging stereotypes we've come to associate with the teens and twenty-somethings of the era).
Of course, having said all of that, there IS always the soundtrack, an inescapably nauseating Simon and Garfunkel celebration of all that is forever twee.
