The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, better known as AandP, is a supermarket chain in the United States.
The company was founded in 1859 as The Great American Tea Company by George Huntington Hartford and George Gilman in Elmira, New York.
It was renamed "The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company" in 1870, and by 1876 had sixty-seven stores, increasing to 1000 by 1915.

Also yesterday, Great Atlantic reported that its fiscal fourth-quarter loss narrowed to $5.71 million, or 15 cents a share, from $59.9 million, or $1.56, a year earlier as it cut costs and sold more private-label products.
The company said sales at stores open at least a year were unchanged in the quarter.

Designed by Howard Chapman in 1907 and built by the Turner Construction Company, the warehouse covers 360,000 square feet of the Jersey City waterfront near the cobblestone historic district of other nineteenth century industrial plants.
In the 1870s it began to ship its goods via the nation's transcontinental railroad and changed its name to the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company; it was incorporated in 1901.
