  The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
Detective doesn’t aspire to be a rousing blockbuster; instead, it simply wants to offer some modest entertainment for its brief running time.
Originally called The Great Mouse Detective in the US, Disney redubbed it The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective for a Nineties reissue; I guess they figured the word “adventures” would pull in the kiddies.
The Great Mouse Detective appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.66:1 on this single-sided, dual-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

Near the beginning of "The Great Mouse Detective," the camera moves through London, passing many of the familiar landmarks, before finally tilting down and moving in toward a little doorway near the ground.
Although the detective in the movie is not called Sherlock Holmes (or Sherlock Mouse, for that matter), he obviously is cut from the same cloth, right down to his ever-present pipe.
The cartoon is an example of the meticulous craftsmanship and great ingenuity of the first Disney animators, who created an endless variety of situations by using the laws of gravity and physics and ladders and paint buckets.

DVD Review - The Great Mouse Detective   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
What’s perhaps most refreshing about "The Great Mouse Detective" is the unique nature of the story it tells.
Incidentally, the opening titles refer to the movie as "The Adventures of the Great Mouse Detective" -- a moniker the film picked up for its 1992 re-release -- indicating that, at the very least, that portion of the transfer came from the newer elements.
All that aside, the film is in and of itself a great little adventure that doesn’t pander to the audience or fall back on any easy animated movie cliches.

One part, in particular, that I really wish would have either been canned, or shortened, is a mouse bar-room scene in which a stage mouse comes out to sing a song called “Let Me Be Good to You” and proceeds to strip to a ‘sexy’ costume while all the male mice hoot and holler.
Great Mouse Detective is also historically significant, as it is the first animated film to ever use the computer, doing so to create Big Ben’s gears.
Through the years, Great Mouse Detective has never gotten much attention, and I just can’t understand why — especially considering how close in nature it is to Disney’s early ‘90s films, and it was the next Disney feature to come after the ‘dark ages’ low point, The Black Cauldron.

Basil of Baker Street is a detective with an eye for details and a mind that can put the pieces together.
Typically, Basil would have treated Olivia's father's kidnapping as just another case, but it just so happens that his kidnapper was a bat with a peg-leg, and Basil knows that the peg-legged bat is a minion of his arch-nemesis Professor Ratigan.
The case itself is pretty simple and doesn't really require the type of intense detective work that Sherlock is known for but hey, I'm just giggly that they made Basil's address 221 1/2 Baker Street.

DVD Verdict Review - The Great Mouse Detective
From the perspective of 2002, The Great Mouse Detective is surprisingly refreshing precisely because it doesn't follow the big-spectacle Disney formula that, by now, has become rather threadbare.
The Great Mouse Detective is nowhere near the top of Disney's achievements, but it's still a strong entry in their massive catalog, and its rhythms and sensibilities differ so much from the grander animated features of the past decade that it has a quaint sort of charm.
It's a simple thing to deduce that The Great Mouse Detective, having saved the Mouse Queen and wrested London from the clutches of evil, is guilty of no crime.
