Topic: The Great Peacemaker

The Great Peacemaker - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Great Peacemaker, sometimes referred to as Deganawida or "Dekanawida" (although as a mark of respect the Iroquois avoid referring to him by this name except in special circumstances), was the traditional founder, with Hiawatha, of the Haudenosaunee (commonly called the Iroquois) confederacy, a political and cultural union of Native American tribes.
The Great Peacemaker established a council of clan and village chiefs to govern the confederacy.
Led by The Great Peacemaker, and Hiawatha, the Haudenosaunee became the dominant Native American group in the northeast woodlands.

Hiawatha - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hiawatha was a follower of The Great Peacemaker, a prophet and shaman who was credited as the founder of the Iroquois confederacy, (referred to as Haudenosaunee by the people).
If The Great Peacemaker was the man of ideas, Hiawatha was the politician who actually put the plan into practice.
Hiawatha was a skilled and charismatic orator, and was instrumental in persuading the Iroquois peoples, the Senecas, Onondagas, Oneidas, Cayugas, and Mohawks, a group of Native Americans who shared a common language, to accept The Great Peacemaker's vision and band together to become the Five Nations of the Iroquois confederacy.

When the time came to say farewell, he took his mother to a tree on a hill near the water and instructed her to come there once a year after his departure and strike the tree with a hatchet.

Then the Great Manitou called him, and asked him, "Why art thou sad in the beautiful heaven which I have made for your joy and happiness?" And the Indian told him that he sighed for the company of the spirits of his relatives and that he felt lone and sorrowful.
So the Great Manitou told him that eh could not send him to the Indian heaven, as he had not, whilst on earth, chosen this one, but that as he had been a very good man, he would send him back to earth again, and given him another chance.
The presence of another "peacemaker" on the prairies does not detract from Maskipiton's stature; it simply indicates that it cannot be proved that "Nichiwa" and "Maskipiton" are the same person.

Being a peacemaker does not mean always being nice to everyone and taking care, no matter what, at all costs to avoid troubles, but rather, it means always aiming for the very best for everyone else in reference to this life and the life to come.
Being a true peacemaker doesn’t mean living in tolerance of all others and in appeasement with everyone but it means praying and working always that others, especially those with whom we come into contact, may with us come to know the God of peace in and through Jesus Christ, the Saviour of sinners.
For one, than you know Christ, the ultimate peacemaker, as your Saviour and Lord and you are convinced, true and eternal peace with God and man can only be found always and again in Christ Jesus and His finished work of peace with His once for all sacrifice on the cross of Calvary.

Thinking Like An Urban Park: Of Anniversaries and New Offerings
The great American urban parks and parks systems still draw multitudes, and, indeed, and new projects multiply of late: Providence has its downtown Waterplace Park along the Woonasquatucket River, New York City's Bronx River will be de-paved and greened, and brownfields restored for a new breed of ecological parks.
Still, incrementalism isn't easy, and both the great peacemaker Nobel and the wilderness hero Teddy Roosevelt, for whom the park was named would probably be pleased that man and man's best friend coexist harmoniously here.
And, surely, the great nature preserver and the urban parkmaker alike would take pleasure in the thought that this public green space would thrive through housekeeping and updating even in a Spartan age and tight budget for massive urban parks.
