Named “The Great Race 2008: New York to Paris” by the event organizers, the Great Race will be a re-run of a similar event that took place in 1908 to showcase the newly invented automobile, before the advent of today’s modern highways and refueling systems.
Great Race 2008: China’s route is 2,653 miles (4,265 km), starting June 20 in Beijing and ending at Wulumuqi in western China on July 2.
The race began in February because the original plan was for the cars to drive the entire distance – from North America to Asia by crossing the ice of the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia.

I don't know about a GREAT race, it was surely a great finish....but I personally thought the first two thirds of the race was one of the most boring Daytona's that I've ever watched.
Half the fans/viewers had to be upset with this race since just about all the big dogs were knocked out of the race on little dust-ups that wouldn't have mattered in a non-restrictor plate race.

This is the first time Kimball has hosted a stop for the annual History Channel Great Race that draws thousands of people at cities along the U.S. A crowds of 25,000 greeted the racers in Binghamton, N.Y. Monday and anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000 are expected in Kimball.
