Santini's work at Zbraslav marked a long association with the older ecclesiastical orders in Bohemia, who provided him with a major source of patronage.
Santini Aichel drew from aesthetic, religious and intellectual currents that were found in local Gothic tradition and from an historical and religious revival that sought to imbue the past with new meaning.
Santini Aichel acted as a forerunner of the Gothic Revival of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

His oldest son (Michael O'Keefe) is just turning eighteen and learning to stand up to a father who issues "direct orders," calls everyone "sports fan," and expects to be called "sir." There are two daughters and one more son, but the movie's main relationship is between the father and the oldest boy.
But he's a great pilot and he's said to be a good leader (even though his first briefing session for the men under him in South Carolina leaves them totally bewildered).
Although The Great Santini is set about ten years before Apocalypse Now, Duvall is playing essentially the same character in both films_we remember his great scene in Apocalypse, shouting that napalm smells to him like victory, as he gives his gung-ho speeches in this movie.

The Great Santini is Colonel Bull Meecham, husband to his lovely Southern enabling wife Lillian, father to Ben, Mary Anne, Matt, and Karen, Marine, fighter pilot, bully, creep, alcoholic, and all around jerk.
This is a great book--not just good, but great--about a career Marine who has established himself as a hero in war, leader within the Corps and one of the most bombastic, foul mouthed and party-hearty personalities anywhere, but a man who has no idea how to alter his personality at home.
The Great Santini goes further, however, and explores racism in the mid-century South, the power of sports in youth culture, the troubled existence of military families, etc.

Pat Conroy's 1976 novel The Great Santini tells their story, an unforgettable portrait of a family that endures in the shadow of a well-intentioned but cruelly demanding and abusive father.
The great surprise here is the character of Bull Meecham himself, a harsh and impossible figure the reader comes to know from Ben's perspective, with hard-won love and understanding.

Set in the rich, sleepy atmosphere of coastal South Carolina in the early 1960s, the novel echoes the timeless tension that emerges between vigorous fathers and their maturing sons, the inevitable clash of personal pride and selfless love, the jealous frustration that comes with maturity.
Bull Meecham, known to all as "The Great Santini," can´t push his son Ben hard enough; to show affection or proud pleasure in Ben´s accomplishment would never occur to him.

The Great Santini : Filmcritic.com Movie Review
An exceptional film, this odd combination of Top Gun and Ordinary People features Robert Duvall in one of his greatest performances (Oscar-nominated, too) as the difficult Marine family patriarch in the years leading up to the Vietnam War.
This ain't Major Dad, as Duvall's "Great Santini" drinks hard and pushes his kids to the limit.
Some of it's funny, some of its tragic, and with the exception of a misfired subplot about race relations, all of it's stellar.
