The recent Waltz on Screen festival organised by the Austrian Cultural Institute in London to coincide with the centenary of Johann Strauss's death celebrated the works of the great escapists of this era with a carefully balanced mixture of sincerity and irony.
The irony of the fact that The Great Waltz was celebrating one of Austria's finest national heroes in a year in which the country had effectively been conquered by Germany seems to have also escaped the makers of the film.
Waltz on Screen appeared at the Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, London, as part of the Perfect Movement festival organised by the Austrian Cultural Institute to mark the centenary of Johann Strauss's death.

WALTZ Dance History Archives Page - Streetswing.com
The Volta of 1556 is weighed by many to be the first actual waltz (some say Ländler in view of the glide) and was the first dance, done in actual closed position (not on the side or open position as some of the others.
The waltz is considered the "Queen of all the dances." The first tangible waltz tune appeared in 1670 in a popular song, "O du lieber Augustin." Vienna was the first to reveal the Viennese waltz (Valse) in the Opera "Una Cosa Rara" in 1776.
The Redowa was modified with the waltz and became the Hop-waltz with the first and fourth steps being leaped instead of glided, except that the first step must be jumped, like a jetté, or a Fouette and the other two steps being run.

The Dances of Court and earlier were usually procession type dances that were very stately, solemn, and dignified types of dances, (French dances were much more vivacious) done in a separated position to show a breeding and nobility superior to that of the peasants.
The prime contribution of the Waltz, historically is that it would be done in a closed position rather than an open or separated dance position.
This positioning of the dancers was determined very scandalous (lewd) for the woman at the time by all whom seen it danced.

In addition, through the gay pattern of his waltzes, sung or played with an effectiveness rarely surpassed on a cinema sound track, The Great Waltz lightly weaves a fragmentary legend of the composer's life.
That The Great Waltz succeeds so notably in evoking the flowery nostalgia inherent in Strauss's music may be partly due to the ironic fact that world events have made imperial Vienna something more than the stock romantic setting it was when a similar operetta had its Manhattan stage opening four years ago.
As unreal and as graceful as the music it records and celebrates, The Great Waltz should charm most cinemaddicts, give opponents of swing their happiest moments of the season.

An American in Paris (1951) - Talk - Spout
Vincente Minnelli's An American in Paris set a new standard for the subgenre known as the "songbook" musical.
Since the dawn of sound, producers had been attracted to films built around the published output of composers as different as Johann Strauss (The Great Waltz, Waltzes From Vienna), Jerome Kern (Till the Clouds Roll By), Cole Porter (Night and Day), and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (Words and Music).
Mostly, the material was strung together, sometimes hooked around a fanciful pseudo-biography of the composer in question, and audiences grinned and bore the plot elements while delighting to the music.
