The Great War: American Front: Current Amazon U.S.A. One-Edition Data
Indeed, it was American soldiers who helped to save the beleaguered armies of England and France in the pivotal days of 1918, when the German army came perilously close to capturing Paris and perhaps winning the war.
The story is told as a series of stories accross the war, both front lines (from Canada to Utah to the desert to the trenches to the sea) and at home.
Not only would they have been deprived of American armies which contributed to the winning of the war against Germany, but England must now also contend with the American invasion of Canada and the presence of the American navy on the high seas.

A War Remembered: Soviet Films of the Great Patriotic War The American Historical Review, 106.3 The History Cooperative
The last great film of the genre, Come and See (Idi i smotri), scripted by the well-known Belorussian writer Ales Adamovich, was commissioned as part of the commemoration for the fortieth anniversary of the end of the war in 1985 and won first prize that year at the Moscow International Film Festival.
Very few Soviet films made during the war concerned men at the front, or even women dutifully waiting on the "home front." The reasons are simple: the carnage at the front, especially in the first year of the war, was so enormous that no amount of cheery Stalinist propaganda would hide it.
Tumarkin's pathbreaking work on the origins and evolution of the war cult had one important shortcoming: although her coverage of the monuments of literature and the graphic and plastic arts was extensive and her analysis of these arts imaginative, her discussion of film was almost nonexistent.

Harry Turtledove: The Great War: American Front
The Great War: American Front ends in midstream, more obviously part of a larger work even than Turtledove's "Worldwar" series.
American Front is not as successful as the "Worldwar" series or How Few Remain.
In American Front, mention of United States superiority is toned down, replaced by reminiscences of two wars lost to the Confederacy, yet their stronger position is obvious throughout the entire novel.

BookPage Fiction Review: The Great War: American Front
Picture this -- from Maryland to Utah, Quebec to Oklahoma, Kentucky to Hawaii, Americans are fighting Americans, on the ground, in the air, under the sea, in trenches, in tanks, with aerial bombardments, poison gas, prison camps and firing squads.
In How Few Remain, the first book of this series, a second, bitter war is fought in the 1880s, ending in a standoff, but the real story is how the lives and philosophies of the two countries are forever altered.

HOW NEWSPAPERS COVERED THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR - The Early America Review, Spring 1997
The news of the war continued unabated in America's press until the French officially relinquished land claims in North America in 1763, and the vast majority of Native Americans east of the Mississippi River either died fighting, succumbed to peace treaties with the English settlers, or moved westward.
News of French deserters, captured French supply ships, and increasing numbers of Native American allied to the English printed in colonial newspapers no doubt helped bolster colonial assurances that the war would soon end,* as did reports that 14,000 English troops were assembled outside Montreal.
It exhibited all the traits of war news with letters from the front, first-hand battle descriptions, official releases in the form of terms of surrender, enemy atrocities, letters supporting the troops, pieces praising soldiers fallen in battle, and biting denunciations of the enemy.

The USA prepares to fight a war on three fronts: both in the north and south, as well as in the Pacific Ocean, all the while protecting their harbors on the Atlantic Coast.
In these novels, Turtledove supposes that the Confederacy won the Civil War and follows the course of history in a North American continent that is now divided into three separate countries.

Fairfield Co. Weekly: Fighting A Two-Front War
He did conjecture, though, that if the war were perhaps to drag on until at least 1949, the drain on white America's resources would be great enough to require the integration, even the unwilling integration, of American society.
Despite a history of military service to the United States dating back to the Revolutionary War, black men in the 20th century, both volunteers and draftees, were, by official Army and Navy policy, deemed morally, psychologically and physically unfit for fighting.
Called upon to fight in defense of their country and in defense of a free world, these black soldiers were also called upon to strip themselves of rank so as not to outrank a white man. Though they fought with valor, they found themselves ignored and hidden away when the fight was through.

UK Shop: The Great War: American Front (The Great War) - Harry Turtledove Books
The whole "Great War" series is based around the notion of a successfully secessionist Confederate States of America still standing in 1914 and throwing its weight into World War 1 on the side of the Triple Entente, while the dastardly Union gets with the Imperialist programme of Kaiser Bill.
Here Harry Turtledove takes the events established in "How Few Remain" and expands on them as he details a very different world and world war.
Still, at least the characters in this book are all people, unlike the one-dimensional time-travelling baddies from Turtledove's "The Guns of the South" or the cardboard aliens from his "World War" books.

Harry Turtledove's second multivolume saga of 20th-century "alternative history," How Few Remain, takes place in a world in which the Confederate States win the Civil War and in 1914, allied with England and France, go to war against the United States once more.
Turtledove's prose and offered activities could easily suffice for a war fought on the borders of two or three states, and do not give the feel of a war fought across the breadth of the continent.
This masterpiece of alternate history takes place in the same world as Turtledove's How Few Remain and begins a projected tetralogy of a First World War fought with Germany and the U.S. allied against Britain, France and the Confederacy.
