Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews: The Great White Hype
TGWH is a sharp, nasty-tongued satire of the professional sport called Prize Fighting.
He remembers that the highest grossing fight in history was a fl man versus a white man. So he sets out to recreate this racial conflict, seeking out the only man who has ever beaten the champ.
So, being the nice white Jewish boy that he is, Cranky headed right for his skin-folk and Crankified 'em.

The Great White Hype review (1996) Samuel L. Jackson - Qwipster's Movie Reviews
The Great White Hype is a broad satire of the boxing industry, particularly in how publicity and marketing govern the suitability of one's rise to the top more so than sheer talent.
That white contender is none other than rock group singer Terry Conklin (Berg, Cop Land), who happens to be the only person to ever defeat Roper in a contest, albeit an amateur match when they were teenagers.
The Great White Hype is amiable in its own fashion, but lacks that true bite that marks a great satire.

 'The Great White Hype' (R)
Watching Jackson is the principal plea sure of "The Great White Hype," a comic film set in the exaggerated world of heavyweight boxing.
His solution is to find a white opponent for James "The Grim Reaper" Roper (Damon Wayans, who has found the perfect character for his limited range) to gin up white America's interest in a title fight.
The only white contenders are glass-jawed and shaped like potatoes so the Reverend searches out Terry Conklin (played with slack-jawed blankness by the slack-jawed and blank Peter Berg), the only man to beat Roper, back in his amateur days.

All-Reviews.com Movie/Video Review: The Great White Hype
The ad campaign for THE GREAT WHITE HYPE touts it as a downright hilarious satire on the world of boxing, but then you wouldn't expect the studioheads to come out and say their movie is just another mediocre comedy we'll all forget about in a few years.
Sultan also has to duck a fighter who is actually interested in a serious fight for the heavyweight title (enough so that he pulls a gun on the Sultan at one point) and bribe an investigative journalist (Jeff Goldblum) who's trying to expose his corruption.
The ending of THE GREAT WHITE HYPE is thoroughly disappointing, and I'm not saying that out of a deep-seated racial prejudice.

This is the conclusion drawn by one of the protagonists of THE GREAT WHITE HYPE, 1996 satire directed by Reginald Hudlin.
The plot of THE GREAT WHITE HYPE touches some potentially stingy issues like the race relations in contemporary America and some plot elements and characters have a striking resemblance to some real life personalities and situations (Don King, Mike Tyson).

He goes straight for the throat in a tirade against professional boxing, but unfortunately, his satire and wit are stale and shoddy.
The byline for The Great White Hype is: 'If you can't find the perfect contender, make one.' And that's exactly what Samuel L. Jackson - as boxing mogul Reverend Fred Sultan - sets out to do.
The subplots are never really focused upon - they drop out when they become too much of an inconvenience - and the main plot's one chance is lost in the final half-hour of the movie (when the result of the match between Roper and Conklin is decided).

 "Best Screenwriting Magazine"--LA Times
Intermittently more sitcom than satire, The Great White Hype is the story of boxing promoter Reverend Fred Sultan (Samuel L. Jackson), who theorizes that the best way to get rich is to pit current champ James "The Grim Reaper" Roper (Damon Wayans) against a Great White Hope.
From Bull Durham to White Men Can't Jump, co- writer Shelton can now add boxing to his cache of sports knowledge (a cache he returned to in 1999's lesser pugilistic 'play, Play It to the Bone).
A strong familiarity with this flamboyant world allows for a vivid canvas on which sharply drawn characters mouth off endlessly to one another; that's a good thing, because the players and dialogue are often so witty, we forget that not much happens in the story.

While sharp and funny, it's never quite clear what the point of it all is. Director Reginald Hudlin (Boomerang) isn't strong enough or skilled enough as a filmmaker to make this level of satire leap off the screen; fortunately, he's got powerful allies in Jackson, Berg, Wayans, Jeff Goldblum, and the rest of the cast.
