Her show initially flops, but Ziegfeld plants some silly stories about milk baths in the press to attract attention, and it works.
The Great Ziegfeld appears in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The film opens with Ziegfeld's (William Powell) strongman attraction on the midway at the 1893 Chicago World Fair -- a show that is failing until Ziegfeld turns it around with the discovery that will send him to the top: Sex appeal sells.
But Ziegfeld also lives extravagantly, sending telegrams to people within shouting distance (the contemporary equivalent might be using a cell phone to call the next room) and gambling away his profits.
Ziegfeld, while not the first to make money off the display of beautiful women, surely was the first to make so much of it.

Powell's consummate charm and boundless energy make Ziegfeld's journey from carnival barker to world-famous producer amusing and exciting, despite some plodding pitstops along the way.
As visually breathtaking as the stage pieces are, they slow down the story, sometime going on for over 10 minutes at a time.
We need to see them in their entirety to enable us to understand why Ziegfeld was so important in the theater world, but I did find myself slightly bored on a few occasions.

In place of a character, the writer hangs several traits on Ziegfeld (incessant telegrams, extravagance, a superstition about elephants) and establishes his rapport with women through a 7 year-old girl (!) and his annoying habit of criticizing their clothing.
As grotesque as it is, The Great Ziegfeld is no more banal than any modern Best Picture Oscar winner, and is certainly a key film to understand MGM's colossal ego trip in the midst of the depression.
Warners' DVD of The Great Ziegfeld is a fine presentation, with the show in near perfect shape and in most scenes showing less grain than Mutiny on the Bounty.

And some of the scenes featuring his famous long-legged Ziegfeld Girls are pretty impressive - even if this account of his life leaves out the way he constantly (and usually successfully) chased them.
The closing scene, as the dying Ziegfeld looks back on his life, is a visual and textual cliche, but a relatively successful one.
Most fascinating here are the lengthy interview-clips with the elderly but still radiantly beautiful and articulate Luise Rainer - she comes across as a remarkable person, whose strength is at odds with the flabby weakness of much of the movie.
