Getting one of the greatest producers in music, Todd Rundgren, gave the band the needed push to create an album that left many of the band's new wave sounds behind in order to concentrate more on an overall aesthetic reminiscent of the great '60s bands like the Beatles.
It was the greatest album from one of the best and most popular bands in hard rock and re-established ACDC as a juggernaut after the death of their original singer Bon Scott.
On this album they mix in heavy rock, pop, and even pseudo-opera (with their definitive song "Bohemian Rhapsody") to bring rock to a whole different headspace.

It could be some stupid story or person (not necessarily stupid) that the album reminds you of, but every song on the album has to appeal to you in whatever mood you may be in.
This is the album that all fraternity rats have in their collection for the old bump and grind after Tuesday night meetings and drinks at the bar.
I feel the album ought be one of the best works, as a whole, not just their best song, by a group or artist that not only is excellent at what they do but is so much so that they have influenced others and helped evolve music as a whole.

Best line from this album is from the girlfriend on the advantages of being involved with a married man "you don't have to wash nobody's funky drawers but your own".
I think the definition of a concept album is this: Rather than use the vinyl to record 8 to 12 seperate concepts, the songs,(even if they have a common theme), the band uses the vinyl as the canvas for their single concept.

Although everyone seemed to trash the article “100 Greatest Albums” posted by Time earlier this week, it did make a bit of noise.

since you have to vote for 10 albums (and MJs are only two) vote for the albums you never heard of, as these are the one which will most likely get the less votes, thus they won't influence the top of the charts.
Maybe The Eagles album are best selling album in US but US is not the whole world, so everybody should know that Michael Jackson's THRILLER is the best selling album on the planet Earth.

It works fine as a glamorous exposition of albums that sold well in their time and are favorites of their fans (the contributing critics), but not as a serious list of what really constitutes on a musical level (that is, minus the hype) the greatest albums.
Such an album is certainly "greater" than this book's #1 album, Sgt. Pepper, since that Beatles album was inspired by an already thriving psychedelic scene that that band did not create nor was even part of, even though, yes, that album may have been the scene's best seller and its most famous.
But for a serious appreciation of the greatest albums, do not look into this tome or you will be greatly disappointed (although obviously many classics are included, inevitably).

So, it is really the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time", NOT counting lots and lots of great albums made by the women RS has overlooked.
Note how the mag is filled with ads for the top 500 albums, with the advertisers apparently served up the list before it was published.

The data is downloadable as text files for further analysis- my primary interest in doing this study was to work out which albums and artists have been able to drive long-term sales even after record industry hype had moved on to other, newer records, and whether there were any surprises in the data.
Also available is the total list sorted as the most commercially important albums ever, and the list broken down into artist careers by adding all the albums for each artist together.
No Led Zeppelin Greatest Hits albums were really necessary- the albums themselves served that purpose, defining a new area in rock which was further explored by many- none of whom could begin to approach the sheer consistency of the list-toppers here.

On the other hand, you're spitting in the face of said artist's attempt to craft a cohesive album, a specific collection of songs with a certain feel and flow.
Acceptable Greatest Hits Albums: ABBA, "ABBA Gold" This is the mother of all greatest hits albums-there probably isn't a record collection around owned by someone above the age of 35 that this album isn't alphabetically located at the front of.
There are just too many albums like this in Dylan's catalog, from his earlier folky stuff like "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" to the electric "Bringing it all Back Home" to the grizzled, acoustic storytelling of "Tangled Up in Blue." The man is just too prolific to squeeze into 79 minutes.

ONCE AGAIN this is not the greatest album list as said, it is most influencial or important, meaning for musicians and society as a whole.
Also, the Spin list is specifically labeled the "greatest" albums, which you are correct in pointing out does not at all mean the most popular or biggest selling.

This album encompasses every genre that rock and roll truly is. "Stone Cold Crazy" has gotta be the greatest metal song ever written, and it was the first of its time.
Pete Townshend was in top form when he wrote this magnificent rock opera (that’s right, ROCK OPERA) and it still endures today as being one of the most original concepts in all of music.
