The Greatest Show in the Galaxy
The Doctor is practising his juggling when a junk-mail satellite materializes inside the TARDIS, inviting him and Ace to the Psychic Circus on the planet Segonax and taunting Ace when she seems reluctant to participate, claiming that she finds circuses boring and clowns creepy.
Nord has already arrived at the circus when the Captain and Mags show up, and despite the warnings of Morgana the ticket seller, the Captain pushes his way into the tent just as Bellboy is thrown into the centre of the ring to face punishment for his disobedience.
It eventually does, and as the Doctor studies the memorial stones embedded in the circus ring and Ace nervously watches the acrobatics of the android clowns, the Ringmaster strides out into the centre of the ring and announces that the talent contest is soon to start -- and the Doctor has been selected to participate.

Doctor Who — Review: Greatest Show in the Galaxy
The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is definitely the most unusual DW story ever.
It is impossible to talk of Greatest Show without mentioning Stephen Wyatt, to whom much credit must go for for his creation of another bizarre corner of the Whovinerse.
While not particularly well done, it is a break from the usual explosion — and a very welcome one at that.

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy is one that belongs firmly in the atypical bracket.
Like its neighbour Silver Nemesis, Greatest Show is one of those highly divisive Doctor Who stories that, as the ageing chestnut goes, you 'either love or hate'.
Well right at the end of the show's run we are clearly in good hands because these should be as bland as ever and as it goes they are gripping.

Wyatt devised a storyline entitled The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, which was originally considered for the studio-bound, three-part slot for Season Twenty-Five.
Meanwhile, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy episode four was broadcast on January 4th, 1989, bringing Doctor Who's twenty-fifth season to a close.
Due to a delay in the release of the UK version (originally set for July 1999), this marks one of the few occasions when the North American versions was actually released first, in November 1999.

Greatest Show In The Galaxy is a cherishably surreal voyage into previously unknown territory.
Taking as its starting point the oft-repeated maxim that clowns are scary (they are, you know), the story plays with some deliciously bizarre imagery, such as clowns driving a silent hearse, or brightly coloured kites being used to track down fleeing prisoners.

Ace also becomes a vital part of the show in this story, gaining an endearing sense of indignation at the plight of others, healthy sarcasm, and just a hint of teenage hormones.
Upon arriving at the Psychic Circus at last, the Doctor discovers the truth: those coming to visit the circus are not there as spectators, but as the entertainment - and the penalty for failing to entertain the unusual audience, a seemingly bland family of three, is death.
Granted, there's a lot of running around, being captured and escaping filling out the four episodes of Greatest Show, but it adds something new to the Who mythology without leaning quite so heavily on the old.

The 25th season of Doctor Who came to an end with the modestly titled four-parter "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy." Attracted by an advertising satellite, the Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and Ace (Sophie Aldred) attend the famous "Psychic Circus" on the planet Segonax.
Before long, however, the Doctor stumbles upon several ominous warnings -- including a buried robot and an abandoned hippie bus -- that all is not fun and games at the circus.
Written by Stephen Wyatt, "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy, Episode 1" first aired on December 14, 1988.

As you may know, a lot of early Doctor Who stories were destroyed by the BBC when they were deemed as no longer having any commercial value.
This of course is no longer the case and the earlier shows are now of much greater interest, especially since the show ended it mammoth 26 year run on television in1989.
Amazingly, early episodes have turned up through out the years, as have audio recordings and photographic references taken at the time of the original broadcasts.
