The Greatest Show on Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Greatest Show on Earth is the slogan for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.
Despite its awards, The Greatest Show on Earth has often been cited by film historians and movie buffs as one of Cecil B. DeMille's lesser motion pictures.
Discussions among film fans (especially on the Internet movie newsgroups) have jokingly referred to this film as "the worst movie ever to win Best Picture." Supporters of this belief especially note that High Noon and The Quiet Man are generally held in higher critical acclaim.

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH
The cornball excesses of the plot be damned, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH remains a marvelous cinematic spectacle that brings to the silver screen, the joys of going to the circus.
While THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH serves as a showcase for circus acts of the 1950s, the plot of the film is built upon story elements that are pure soap opera.
Of course, amongst all this overwrought melodrama, producer/director DeMille manages to document the well-oiled machine that is the circus; showing the audience everything that goes into preparing the greatest show on earth for each performance on the road.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH - DVD
But while The Greatest Show on Earth is aimed squarely at those loathsome people who speak of films as "rollercoaster thrill-rides," there's no denying that it was made with a zesty vulgarity and executed with loving care.
The show in question is the vast spectacle known as the Ringling Bros./Barnum and Bailey circus.
It's consciously about putting on a show, tenuously setting itself in the same genre as Jean Renoir's French Cancan and Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger's The Red Shoes: The Greatest Show on Earth is likewise about the trade-offs between life and art and the compromises/sacrifices made for the honour of being in the limelight.

Recognizing the women to whom the poem 'The Greatest Show on Earth" is dedicated to is essential to grasping its meaning.
The history behind the poem fittingly works its way in from the beginning with the title "The Greatest Show on Earth," alluding to the side-show exhibition experience the four subjects of the poem were exposed to.
Perhaps the poet created "The Greatest Show on Earth" with such structural liberty with the intent of not restricting the memory of these women any more than they had been in life and death.

It's particularly awful during the last part of the movie after the big circus train wreck where Brad is impaled on a cage or something and she goes into full on "let's put on a show and save the circus" mode.
As hideously gaudy as the circus it seeks to glorify, The Greatest Show On Earth is not only the worst best picture ever, but also an example that the mere presence of big stars and sheer length do not an epic make.

THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH is a dazzling, only-by-DeMille spectacle of life behind the scenes with Ringling Bros.-Barnum and Bailey Circus, the best three-ring circus in the land.
This gutsy star-studded spectacle was produced in cooperation with Ringling Bros.-Barnum and Bailey circus and filmed in a semidocumentary style, with frequent cuts from the full-scale grandiose circus acts and larger-than-life costumes by the legendary Edith Head to real footage of the daily life on the road for the full-scale traveling operation.
This all-star cast, including Charlton Heston, Dorothy Lamour, and James Stewart, celebrates the extravagant three-ring circus and depicts the passionate scenes of love and jealousy behind the greatest show on Earth.

In director Cecile B. DeMille's epic The Greatest Show On Earth, viewers follow the famous Ringling Bros.-Barnum and Bailey Circus as is heads from town to town spreading joy to every man and woman aged 6 to 60.
If The Greatest Show On Earth strives to be the quintessential movie about the circus, it certainly comes close—from Jimmy Stewart's Buttons the clown to Betty Hutton and Cornel Wilde's dueling trapeze artist Sebastian, there's something for everyone who still looks at the circus with a bit of wonder.
I'd estimate three fourths of The Greatest Show On Earth is eye-candy circus filler while only a third of the screenplay deals in actual human interaction and drama.
