DVD Verdict Review - The Greatest Story Ever Told
MGM has now released The Greatest Story Ever Told on DVD in a two-disc special edition that it is trumpeting as the restored roadshow version.
This is the story of the life of Jesus Christ, with the vast majority of the time devoted to his adult years.
Some critics even took to calling it "The Longest Story Ever Told." Given that, despite MGM's trumpeting that this is the restored roadshow version, we still seem to be missing an hour of the original cut of 4 hours and 20 minutes.

There has been a good deal of confusion about the 'official' version of 'The Greatest Story Ever Told.' In recent years I became satisfied that the 3 hour and 20 minute version was the one that my father considered his picture.
It also makes one aware that the assumption that the "cut" version was not the preference or the adequate representation of the director, may be inaccurate.

Eric Idle responded "Jesus Christ: His Lust for Glory." This idea was pursued, but in the making of Life of Brian the troupe realized that there's really nothing to make fun of in Jesus; he's a rather dull main character.
Hence the main problem with 1965's The Greatest Story Ever Told, the story of Jesus, from birth to crucifixion and resurrection.
The Greatest Story Ever Told isn't that at all, but it is hardly the worst of Hollywood's Biblical adaptations that became popular in the wake of Ben-Hur.

George Stevens' vision of the story has a stark majesty, and is taken at a leisurely pace; it is also quite verbal, with some of the major events in the gospels not pictured, but spoken of instead.
I felt that The Greatest Story Ever Told portrayed Christ as a man who KNEW he was from up above, and that that was the way he carried himself (quite a contrast from Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ).
I gave it four, however, because while it is one of my most beloved portrayals of Christ and the story of his life, there are some parts during the film where the screenplay seems to be lacking.

The Greatest Story comes up with nothing to challenge anybody, except the actors, who must strive not to laugh out loud or simply give up.
To be fair, Newman took all kinds of assignments (and sometimes got lucky enough to work on classic films), even while he ran Fox music, and I suspect he thought of himself as the supreme professional who could come up with something at least tolerable, even on relatively short notice.

The best recent example is, of course, the Greatest Story Ever Told, in which Dan Rather claimed to have proven that George W. Bush had done something or other while in the Texas Air National Guard.
The problem was that Rather's proof lay in a bunch of made-up documents, their inauthenticity demonstrated largely by hordes of right-wing bloggers who took the time to sleuth out the typestyles of 30-year-old government-issue typewriters.
He was last seen on late-night C-SPAN pretending that the story was true because no respectable news outlet had proven it false (a standard which also proves that Dan Rather buggers goats and eats baby hamsters).

Commentaries: The Second Greatest Story Ever Told - Christianity Today Movies
Many compelling stories do this—The Lord of the Rings and The Chronicles of Narnia among them—but Star Wars was the vehicle that set my mind reeling because it was so accessible as a larger-than-life, super-hyped, and visually fueled film during my formative years as a boy with an over-active imagination.
So, to fill in gaps, I'd act out or write stories about what the Clone Wars were, what Han did after the trilogy, and what Ord Mantell was like.
Yes, Star Wars is a great story that has stuck with me my whole life, but only because it happens to tap into the questions only truly answered in the Greatest Story—the one calling us to a God not so far, far away.
