The Green Hornet was an American radio program that ran on WXYZ (Detroit), the Mutual Network and the ABC Blue Network from January 31, 1936 to December 5, 1952.
The Green Hornet was adapted into a pair of movie serials in the early 1940s.
So, when the Green Hornet said, "rig for silent running," the hornet-like buzz on the radio show was turned off and the listener was left to imagine that the car really was silent.

That's a real disappointment for me I was looking forward to a movie adaptation of that, I don't mind it won't be Smith, but he would have had an interesting take on the topic.
In the case of Hornet, that ball was, after years of development hell, just simply handed to him.
He should have taken "Green Hornet" all the way, so then he can finally be justified in his rantings.

Since Green Hornet and Kato masqueraded as criminals in order to destroy crime from the inside, they ended up butting heads with Batman and Robin over a counterfeit-stamp ring being run by Roger Carmel (Harry Mudd on classic Trek, and the voice of Cyclonus in the Unicron-era Transformers 'toon).

He’ll still read the drafts and give me notes and cut suggestions as always, but that’ll be about it on "Hornet." I’ll miss him something fierce.
