TheMovieBoy Review - The Grudge (2004)
The legend of "The Grudge" goes like this: when a person dies at the hands of a powerful rage, an unstoppable curse is put into motion that goes after anyone who comes into contact with it.
From specter-like children with flened eyes to frightening videotape footage of one of the ghosts walking toward the camera, the resemblance "The Grudge" holds with "Ringu" (and its 2002 remake, "The Ring") is not incidental.
Although such influences are clear, "The Grudge" finds its own identity through intricately designed non-linear storytelling and a premise that is cleanly developed, but open-ended enough in its details so that the scary unknown spell it conjures is never broken.

Takashi Shimizu: On the Set of Grudge 2 - ComingSoon.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Takashi Shimizu: "The Grudge" was a complete remake of "Ju-On", meaning the storyline was very similar, basically the same, but "Grudge 2" is actually different from "Ju-On 2." I don't think I would have accepted this job, if it was going to be the same storyline.
For "Grudge 2," it's all about scares--I have to think about how to scare people--but I think scaring people and entertaining people, I mean making them laugh, is so close that I think it's always back-to-back, so when I'm thinking about this (horror), I can always come up with this (humor).
The thing is that "The Grudge" has a very special storyline and this very unique world atmosphere to it, so if there's any director who can create that, that I can count on, maybe I would take a part of whatever to cooperate.

That's the Catch-22 about grudges: They can make you feel really lousy, yet one of the things that would help you get past them -- confronting the person who triggered the grudge -- is often too high a hurdle to leap.
So while a grudge may have a legitimate beginning, and may initially make you feel powerfully self-righteous, ultimately, harboring a grudge is toxic.
And, depending on the seriousness of the offense, grudges leave you irritable and anxious, souring your spirits and depriving you of joy.

Just because The Grudge serves up a non-linear presentation of the plot and doesn't employ gore to impart its most visceral effects doesn't mean the film is automatically excellent (in the same way that a gory film is not automatically bad just because of the gore).

Slant Magazine - Film Review: The Grudge
Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is studying abroad as a home care nurse so she can be with her architecture student boyfriend Doug (Jason Behr), and becomes embroiled in a nightmare when she's assigned to visit a zombie-like old woman residing in a malignant haunted house.
Yet The Grudge is slightly more frightening than its predecessor, in part because the director punctuates each icy jolt (including a doozy of a shampoo shower scene) with a bigger thump, and in part because the American characters' cultural alienation amplifies the film's disquietingly uneasy mood.
Alas, that ominous atmosphere is infinitely more compelling than the transparent protagonists, with cutie-pie Gellar vainly attempting to transcend her role as the prototypical pretty-blonde-in-distress and the blank Pullman draining all life from the screen as a college professor stalked by a love-sick student.
