WWF Canada - About the Gully
Located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 360 kilometres east of Halifax, the Gully is the largest underwater canyon on the east coast of North America.
The threat of the greatest concern to the endangered northern bottlenose whale is the impacts of seismic blasts used for oil and gas exploration in the vicinity of the Gully.
The designation of the Gully must be the first of a series of steps towards conserving marine biodiversity on the east coast of Canada.

WWF Canada - News - Gully to become Atlantic Canada’s first Marine Protected Area
Today’s announcement means that the federal cabinet has approved the regulations to designate the Gully a marine protected area, and, as part of the final process for the designation to be finalized, the government must allow a 30-day public consultation period.
Barring the emergence of any unforeseen issues, which is unlikely given that discussion about protecting the Gully has gone on for ten years, the Gully will formally become an MPA early in the New Year.
“Protecting the Gully is the first of a series of steps that the federal government has committed to regarding maritime conservation in the Atlantic Region, as well as the West Coast and the North,” says Hummel.

The typical ground temperatures of -70°C (or colder) in the gully regions is fatal to claims that large volumes of liquid water suddenly “seeped” from several hundred meters below Mars’ surface.
Straining to overcome this fact by imagining saline solutions, unusually high heat flow on Mars, exotic liquids, lower than expected thermal conductivities, and Mars tipped on its axis is speculation on top of speculation.
