The Guns of the South (1992, ISBN 0-345-37675-7) is a novel by writer Harry Turtledove.
Unfortunately, the AWB have managed to secure control over a large portion of North Carolina due to other elements of their advanced technology which they have not shared with Lee's men (including walkie-talkies and flak jackets), and they manage to successfully repel all Confederate attempts to retake their territory.
Colonel Henry Pleasants, a former Union officer who remained in the South after he had been captured during the War, that finally allows the Confederates to breach the AWB perimeter and defeat the combatants, capturing those who are unable to escape in their time machine.

 History
The guns of the signal system used to call the Burghers to arms, were mainly 6 pdrs, with several 1 or 2 pdr bronze breech loading swivel guns (called camers van basjen) at intermediate or supplementary positions.
Characteristic of these guns are a thicker but shorter button, and the first and second reinforces are more parallel than those of guns cast in Sweden, which have a constant taper from the base-ring to the muzzle astragal.
The first great reshuffle of guns occurred under French influence in the early 1780's with larger guns being positioned at key positions and older or smaller guns being relegated to the defence of the flanks, at secondary batteries or for signal use.

New gun controls came into force last year under South Africa's Firearms Control Act, but some weapons-shop owners say high crime rates are pushing law-abiding citizens to look for alternative means of defending themselves.
Estimates of the number of illegal firearms in South Africa vary between 1 and 4 million, he said, but the real problem was from some 30,000-40,000 hardcore criminals using a small number of illegal guns.
South Africa began a firearms amnesty on January 1 that to date has netted about 13,000 weapons, but critics say most of the weapons handed in are old and would never have been used for crime.

Striderweb Reviews: The Guns of the South   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-22)
An historical novel masquerading as science fiction, The Guns of the South examines the issues and personalities surrounding the American Civil War through the perspective of a Confederate States of America that successfully wins its bid for independence.
There is a definite strain of fantasy in the novel, as the south is able to turn back the overwhelming strength of the Northern states only through the assistance of white supremacists who have traveled back in time from the 21st century to ensure that American slavery survives.
Despite this element, which (obviously) heavily influences the plot, the story is a close examination of the actual historical personalities, ranging from Abe Lincoln and the Confederate president Jefferson Davis, to soldiers pulled from historical records.

Robert E. Lee, only months from the defeat at Gettysburg, ponders yet another spring and summer of confrontation with the North when he is approached by a man offering him an unparallelled advantage in the war --- weaponry from the 20th Century in the form of the AK-47.
As it turns out, this man is the leader of a group of South African whites who have traveled back in time to 1864 in an effort to change the course of history and create in the Confederate States of America a power center for the white race into the 21st Century.
As Lee begins his path toward the Presidency of the Confederacy, he begins to question whether slavery should continue and comes to a conclusion that puts him at odds with the foreign benefactors who gave the South the means to achieve its independence.

However, "The Guns of the South" disposes of both the Union army and the Civil War rather quickly, because this alternative history is ultimately about what type of nation the Confederacy would have become.
The strength of this novel does not rest on physics but on characterization and even though the idea that Lee's personal charisma would have been sufficient to get the Confederacy to abandon slavery, it is simply one of those idealized beliefs I would like to hold on to.
"Guns of the South" is a good read, and whether you come to it as a Civil War buff or a fan of alternative histories, I think either way you will enjoy the novel.

ToxicUniverse.com - Turtledove, Harry - 1992 - Guns of the South, The Books Review
It is the question that lies at the heart of Harry Turtledove's The Guns of the South, a novel that gives the Confederate States of America the benefit of the doubt our history never allowed it.
The madmen from the future see in the South an exploitable cradle of white supremacy, founded on the "peculiar institution" of slavery—an institution, they are certain, that the Confederacy's birth was meant to enshrine forever.
The narrative of The Guns of the South is very straightforward; Turtledove is a history professor and approaches his subject with a historian's detachment: He is very even-handed in presenting the points of view of both North and South.

 Harry Turtledove: Departures
Even the excerpt from The Guns of the South which appears at the end announces that the book will be coming to paperback in October 1993 (although I am told this will be changed in future printings).
The first short story Harry Turtledove published, back in Universe 10 in 1980, was a satirical piece called "Report of the Special Committee on the Quality of Life." This story was written as a bureaucratic study and explained why Christopher Columbus's proposed journey to find a Western passage to China was impracticable.
